Richard Vander Weerd 2nd At Thunderbowl Raceway

PETERSEN MEDIA- Continuing to have a very consistent 2016 season, Richard Vander Weerd picked up a second place finish on Saturday night at the Thunderbowl Raceway in Tulare, CA with the USAC West Coast 360’s.

“It was another good night for us,” Richard Vander Weerd said. “We had good speed all night and hung right with the leader in the feature but just ran out of time.”

Taking to the high-banked Thunderbowl Raceway, Vander Weerd got his night off to a great start as he established a New Track Record during qualifying time trials aboard his Vander Weerd Construction/Stonegate Development/Battery Worx No. 10.

Finishing third in his heat race, Vander Weerd would grid the field from the second row for the feature event. When the green flag dropped, Vander Weerd would slip back to the fourth spot. Battling for third and fourth with Landon Hurst, Vander Weerd would get the spot as he then chased after DJ Johnson and Tristan Guardino.

Working the bottom of the speedway on lap nine, Vander Weerd would get around Guardino for the second spot and begin what would be a race long pursuit of DJ Johnson.

Going to the top of the speedway in the race’s closing laps, Vander Weerd would close in on the race leader, and things would get interesting as Johnson bounced of the wall a few time. On the race’s final lap, Johnson would get out of shape in turns one and two, but Vander Weerd would be forced to take evasive action to avoid contact and it would result in Johnson getting away, as Vander Weerd held on to finish second.

“I really figured out what I needed to do the last five laps, and it got interesting,” Vander Weerd added. “Unfortunately I ran out of time and we ended up second. Huge thanks to everyone that helps out this race team on a weekly basis.”

Richard and his Vander Weerd Racing team would like to thank Vander Weerd Construction, Stonegate Development, Battery Worx, Mid-Valley Pipe, Basic Industries, Factory Kahne Shocks, Steve Watt Enterprises, FK Rod Ends, PXP Racewear and K&N for their support in 2016.

2016 BY THE NUMBERS: Starts-7, Wins-1, Top 5’s-5, Top 10’s-5.

ON TAP: Richard will make his first winged start of the season on Friday night as he is set to compete at the Keller Auto Speedway in Hanford, CA.
