PETERSEN MEDIA- After a week off from sprint car racing, Richard Vander Weerd was back in action at the Perris Auto Speedway with the USAC/CRA Series where he would finish second during the Tribute To Indy and come oh-so-close to backing up last year’s win.
“We had a really good night, and came pretty close to stealing that one at the line,” Vander Weerd said.
Timing his Vander Weerd Construction/Stonegate Development/Battery Worx No. 10 machine in sixth fastest, the Visalia, CA driver would finish third in his heat race and would find himself on the pole for the feature event.
Lining up on the front row alongside Austin Williams, Vander Weerd would fall back into the second spot as the race went green, though he would not let Williams get away from him.
Keeping Williams in striking distance, Vander Weerd would soon feel pressure from Jake Swanson as the duo would begin fighting over the second spot. With Swanson getting the spot, Vander Weerd would fall back to the third spot for a few laps before reclaiming the position.
Back in second, Vander Weerd would reel in Williams as the laps clicked off. Visibily cutting into the lead, Vander Weerd would make things interesting with just two laps to go.
Coming within a couple car lengths of the lead as the lead duo came to the white flag, Vander Weerd cut the gap down as they entered turn three. Coming down the fronts stretch, Vander Weerd get near the leaders back bumper, but would settle for the second spot.
“We really got going those last few laps, and needed another lap or two to make the pass,” Vander Weerd added. “It is great to be on the podium with these guys, and we will try again in a few weeks.”
Richard and his Vander Weerd Racing team would like to thank Vander Weerd Construction, Stonegate Development, Battery Worx, Mid-Valley Pipe, Basic Industries, Factory Kahne Shocks, Steve Watt Enterprises, FK Rod Ends, PXP Racewear and K&N for their support in 2016.
2016 BY THE NUMBERS: Starts-12, Wins-1, Top 5’s-6, Top 10’s-9.
