PETERSEN MEDIA- With engine woes plaguing Richard Vander Weerd in winged action, the Vander Weerd Racing team opted to dismount the wings, and take the normal winged car to Santa Maria on Saturday night where Vander Weerd would finish in the fifth spot.

“We got the engine issues sorted out, but the car reacts differently than our normal non-wing car does so we chased it a bit in the feature event,” Richard Vander Weerd said.

Timing the Vander Weerd Construction/Stonegate Development/Battery Worx No. 10 machine in seventh fastest, Vander Weerd would finish fourth in his heat race and find himself on the front row of the feature event.

Trying to find a balance with the different car, Vander Weerd admittedly could not get comfortable as the night moved along. From his front row starting position, Vander Weerd would slip back to the third spot as the race went green.

Stalking the lead duo, Vander Weerd went to work on the low side of the speedway, as he waited for an opportunity to make a move to get the race lead.

When the opportunity presented itself, the Visalia, CA driver went for the pass, but it did not work out, and he would end up losing a couple of most positions, as he now found himself in the fifth spot.

Chasing after Trey Marcham and Bud Kaeding for the final few laps, Vander Weerd was unable to get back the positions he lost, and would close his night up with a fifth place finish.

“I just could not get comfortable, and I think it showed,” Vander Weerd said. “On the good side, we got the engine figured out so hopefully we have a good night in our next winged race, but on the down side, you hate to go backwards when you have that good of a starting position.”

Richard and his Vander Weerd Racing team would like to thank Vander Weerd Construction, Stonegate Development, Battery Worx, Mid-Valley Pipe, Basic Industries, Steve Watt Enterprises, FK Rod Ends, PXP Raceway and K&N for their support in 2015.

2015 BY THE NUMBERS: Starts-24, Wins-5, Top 5’s-9, Top 10’s-13.

ON TAP: Richard will be back in action on Saturday night as the USAC West Coast 360 Series takes to the Keller Auto Speedway in Hanford, CA.
