PETERSEN MEDIA- Making a long awaited return to Perris Auto Speedway last Saturday night, Richard Vander Weerd would make a couple of late race moves to net a fifth place finish during the Glenn Howard Classic.
“We went out a timed in and it was still a little greasy so we were in an early hole,” Richard Vander Weerd said. “We got to sixth pretty quick in the main, and as the top came in I moved up and was able to get fifth coming to the line.”
Timing the Vander Weerd Construction/Stonegate Development/Mid-Valley Pipe backed No. 10 in ninth fastest amongst the 23 cars checked into the event, Vander Weerd would then pick up a second place finish in his heat race.
Lining up ninth on the grid for the feature event, Vander Weerd would work the bottom in the early goings of the race, as he was able to race his way in to the sixth spot.
As the field mostly worked the bottom, Vander Weerd would venture to the high side just as the race reached the halfway point. While the top came in and was good, the bottom remained hooked up too and it was tough to make up ground.
Staying committed to the high-side, Vander Weerd would get a big run on the white flag lap that saw him overtake Danny Faria at the finish line as he would leave with a fifth place finish.
“Once we got to the top I felt good, but the bottom was just as good and it made it tough to really make up any ground,” Vander Weerd added. “I stayed up there and kept pounding away, and it worked out coming to the finish line.”
