PETERSEN MEDIA- After a couple weekends away from the track, Richard Vander Weerd returned to action on Friday and Saturday night as he took part in the Peter Murphy Classic at the Thunderbowl Raceway in Tulare, CA with the USAC West Coast 360ci series.
“We had an okay weekend, but it was still nice to get back to racing after having a couple of weekends off,” Richard Vander Weerd Said.
The two-night show would kick off on Friday night, and Vander Weerd would get off to a quick start as he timed his Vander Weerd Construction/Stonegate Development/Battery Worx No. 10 machine in fastest in qualifying.
Lining up in the second row of his heat race, Vander Weerd would race his way up to finish in the third spot, and would finish just outside of the inversion for the feature event and would line up in the 11th spot for the 30-lap affair.
Running to high, scary side of the speedway during the feature event, Vander Weerd would make headway as he got up into the seventh spot. With the cushion right up against the wall, Vander Weerd’s right rear would slide up the wall and his machine would get upside down.
With the accident not to violent, Vander Weerd’s team would make quick repairs and the Visalia, CA driver would race his way back up to finish in the ninth spot.
With Saturday’s program lined up off of Friday night’s finish, Vander Weerd would line up on the front row of his heat race. Picking up the win, Vander Weerd would move into the Pole Shuffle where he would end up seventh, putting him in the fourth row of the 30-lap A Main.
On the extremely slick Thunderbowl Raceway, Vander Weerd would work around the bottom of the speedway as he fought his way forward. Getting up into the third spot, Vander Weerd would find himself battling with Brody Roa and Bud Kaeding, with Ryan Bernal trying to get around him.
A couple of late cautions would bunch the field up, and it would cost Vander Weerd a few spots as he would slip back to finish in the fifth spot.
“Friday night was a little eventful, and Saturday night we were pretty good all night I thought,” Vander Weerd. “Thanks to my guys for their hard work in the work area Friday night, and for giving me a good car all weekend long.”
Richard and his Vander Weerd Racing team would like to thank Vander Weerd Construction, Stonegate Development, Battery Worx, Mid-Valley Pipe, Basic Industries, Factory Kahne Shocks, Steve Watt Enterprises, FK Rod Ends, PXP Racewear and K&N for their support in 2016.
