PETERSEN MEDIA- On a hooked up Thunderbowl Raceway in Tulare, CA Richard Vander Weerd tried everything he could to get moving forward, but with passing at a premium he would pick up his 20th Top-Five finish of the 2015 season.
“Friday night I felt like we had pretty good speed, but I am still trying to get a hang of the winged car, and on Saturday we were pretty good, but the track was really tricky to pass on and we ended up finish fifth,” Richard Vander Weerd said.
Timing the Vander Weerd Construction/Stone Gate Development/Battery Worx No. 10 machine in fifth fastest, Vander Weerd was one of the few drivers who was able to pass in his heat race, as he would charge from his second row starting position to finish in the second spot.
Lining up in the third row for the 30-lap A Main event, Vander Weerd would work hard to get up to the fourth spot as he would race wheel-to-wheel with Bud Kaeding for much of the race battling for the third spot.
Searching all over the hooked up Thunderbowl Raceway, Vander Weerd would continue to run fourth until the yellow flag flew late in the race. When the green dropped, Vander Weerd would feel pressure from Ryan Bernal, as he looked for the fourth spot.
In the closing laps, Bernal would get by RVW and he would go on to take the checkered flag with a fifth place finish.
Friday night, Vander Weerd and company were in action at the Keller Auto Speedway for the tracks’ final winged 360ci race of the season. Timing in 19th fastest, Vander Weerd would line up in the 10th row for the feature event.
On the immaculately prepared Keller Auto Speedway surface, Vander Weerd would focus on hitting his marks and turning in solid laps as he continues to acclimate to the winged racecar.
In the race’s closing laps, Vander Weerd would get up over the cushion in turns three and four, and not wanting to come back on the track in front of the leaders, he would opt to take his car back to the pit area a couple of laps early.
“Saturday night was really tough to pass on, but we did what we could to pick up a couple of spots,” Vander Weerd said. “Friday night, the track was really racy, I am just still learning to race the winged car and am hoping that we can build on this year during the off season. I want to thank everyone who helps us out and continues to support our team.”
Richard and his Vander Weerd Racing team would like to thank Vander Weerd Construction, Stonegate Development, Battery Worx, Mid-Valley Pipe, Basic Industries, Factory Kahne Shocks, Steve Watt Enterprises, FK Rod Ends, PXP Racewear and K&N for their support in 2015.
