PETERSEN MEDIA- Finishing second at the Perris Auto Speedway over the Memorial Day Weekend, Richard Vander Weerd was one spot better on Saturday night as the Visalia, CA driver scored his second win of the season.
“The track was pretty hooked up and fast all night long, and we were just able to take advantage of our starting spot,” Vander Weerd said.
Timing the Vander Weerd Construction/Stonegate Development/Battery Worx No. 10 machine in sixth fastest in qualifying time trials, Vander Weerd would find himself in the third row of his heat race.
Finishing in the fourth spot, Vander Weerd would transfer into the feature event, and as fate would have it, he would find his machine on the pole for the 30-lap A Main event.
On a surface that stayed almost too good as the night went on, Vander Weerd would jump out to the lead when the green flag was shown to the field. With Jake Swanson flanking him, Vander Weerd would continue to hit his marks and set a strong pace out front.
Leading all 30-laps on Saturday night, Vander Weerd would pick up his first USAC/CRA win of the season, and close to within just two points of series point leader Brody Roa in doing so.
“I typically don’t like starting on the pole, but when there isn’t a lot of passing, it isn’t a bad place to be,” Vander Weerd said. “I have to thank all of the guys who help us out and give me a great car to put ourselves in a good place to succeed.”
