PETERSEN MEDIA- Two night of action with the USAC/CRA Series over the holiday weekend saw Richard Vander Weerd take over the series point lead on the strength on his fourth and seventh place finishes.

“It was a decent weekend for our team, but we came out of it in a pretty good spot,” Richard Vander Weerd said. “We were in the mix during both nights of action, and took advantage of a few things that went our way.”

Checking in at the Santa Maria Speedway on Friday night, Vander Weerd would time his Vander Weerd Construction/Stonegate Development/Battery Worx backed No. 10 machine in fastest in time trials before picking up a third place finish in heat race action.

Gridding the field from the sixth spot, Vander Weerd would slip back to the eighth spot as the race went green. On a fast surface, passing was at a premium on this night, and a non stop feature would make things even that more difficult on the Visalia, CA pilot.

Getting up into the seventh spot, Vander Weerd would chase after Jake Swanson as he looked for the sixth spot, but on this night he would take the checkered flag in the seventh spot.

Heading to the Perris Auto Speedway on Saturday night for the Firecracker 30, Vander Weerd would lay down an okay lap in time trials as he found himself 10th overall on the speed chart.

Again finishing third in his heat race, Vander Weerd would grid the field from the fifth row for the 30-lap ‘A’ Main event. Getting off to a nice start, Vander Weerd would work his way toward the Top-Five as he occupied the seventh position.

Avoiding a multi-car pile up that took place in front of him, Vander Weerd would take over the fourth spot, before he moved into third. Running much of the race in the third position, Vander Weerd would battle with Damion Gardner in the race’s final laps.

Losing the spot to Gardner with just a few laps remaining, Vander Weerd would close his weekend out with a fourth place finish.

“I have to thank everyone for all of their hard work all weekend long,” Vander Weerd said. “We have been pretty strong in the 410ci car this year, and hopefully we can stay in the hunt for this thing through the Summer.”

Richard and his Vander Weerd Racing team would like to thank Vander Weerd Construction, Stonegate Development, Battery Worx, Mid-Valley Pipe, Basic Industries, Factory Kahne Shocks, Steve Watt Enterprises, FK Rod Ends, PXP Racewear and K&N for their support in 2016.

2016 BY THE NUMBERS: Starts-17, Wins-2, Top 5’s-9, Top 10’s-13.

ON TAP: Richard will take the next two weekends off before returning to action July 22nd and 23rd and Thunderbowl Raceway in Tulare, CA
