PETERSEN MEDIA- Getting back in the seat after a couple weeks way from racing, Richard Vander Weerd showed no signs of rust on Saturday night as he finished eighth with the USAC/CRA Series at Perris Auto Speedway.
“I didn’t get timed in to well, but we rebounded and raced well for the rest of the night I thought,” Vander Weerd said. “The bottom went away in the feature and I was pleased with how we were able to get around the top.”
Timing his Vander Weerd Construction/Stonegate Development/Mid-Valley Pipe backed No. 10 machine in 13th quickest in time trials, Vander Weerd would proceed to pocket a second place finish in heat race action.
Finding himself mid-pack for the feature event, Vander Weerd would take the green flag from the 12th starting position. The early stages of the race would see the Visalia, CA product hold steady in 12th as much of the field worked around the bottom of the speedway.
As the laps clicked off, the track would begin to change and Vander Weerd begin to take a peak at the high side of the ½ mile facility. Making up ground on the top groove, Vander Weerd would get going, as he would soon crack the Top-10.
Continuing to go forward as time ran out, Vander Weerd would make it up as far as the eighth spot when he was shown the checkered flag.
“We ended up eighth, but I think we had a far better car than that,” Vander Weerd said. “We started too far back and really didn’t going until late in the race. It was good to get back racing, and good to move forward.”
