PETERSEN MEDIA- Following the USAC/CRA Series to Canyon Speedway Park over the weekend, Richard Vander Weerd would have a strong showing as he recorded a seventh place finish on Friday night before finishing third during Saturday night’s finale.
“Friday night it was tough pass, but we were able to make up some ground,” Vander Weerd said. “Saturday night we were really good and actually were running second late in the race but something went south in our fuel system and we ended up third.”
Kicking Hall of Fame Classic weekend off on Friday night, the Visalia, CA driver would time his machine in 10th fastest in qualifying time trials. Lining up fourth in his heat race, Vander Weerd would get into some early trouble on the race’s opening lap and find himself in the back of the pack.
Restarting from the tail, Vander Weerd would finish in the sixth spot, and find himself in the fifth row of the feature event. Working his way forward when the race came to life, Vander Weerd would get his Vander Weerd Construction/Stonegate Development/Battery Worx backed machine up to the fifth spot late in the race, but would lose a few spots in the closing laps and finish seventh.
Saturday night’s finale saw Vander Weerd get his night off to a great start as he laid down the fastest lap in time trials. With the track still greasy in heat races, Vander Weerd would finish in the fifth spot and find himself in the fourth row for the 30-lap feature event.
With a very strong car under him, Vander Weerd got moving forward quickly once the action came to life. Carving his way through the Top-Five, Vander Weerd would soon find himself in the third spot late in the race as he chased after RJ Johnson and Austin Williams.
As laps clicked down, Vander Weerd would begin pressuring Williams for the second spot. With the white flag in the air, Vander Weerd looked to have a run on the second spot but a stumble with keep him from making the move, and he would close his weekend out with a third place finish.
“We came on strong in the Saturday night feature event,” Vander Weerd said. “It was a good run from seventh to third, and I have to thank my guys for their continued hard work.”
Richard and his Vander Weerd Racing team would like to thank Vander Weerd Construction, Stonegate Development, Battery Worx, Mid-Valley Pipe, Basic Industries, Factory Kahne Shocks, Steve Watt Enterprises, FK Rod Ends, PXP Racewear and K&N for their support in 2016.
