Richard Vander Weerd Second at Thunderbowl Raceway

PETERSEN MEDIA- Returning to racing after a two-week hiatus, Richard Vander Weerd picked up a second place finish with the USAC West Coast 360’s on Saturday night.

“We ran the winged car on Friday, and after going to the back early in the feature, I pulled off halfway through the feature to save our car for a very big night of racing on Saturday night,” Vander Weerd said. “We had a good race going on Saturday in Tulare, CA but unfortunately the feature was cut a little short.”

Taking to the high-banked Thunderbowl Raceway in Tulare, CA on Saturday night, Vander Weerd would kick his night off by timing his Vander Weerd Construction/Stonegate Development/Battery Worx No. 10 machine in third fastest and qualified for the night’s Dash For Cash.

Lining up on the front row of the Dash, Vander Weerd would jump into the lead and never look back as he picked up the win and earned the cool $500 that came along with it.

Finishing fourth in his heat race, the Visalia, CA wheelman would line up in the second row of the feature event as he found himself in a tight battle with Bud Kaeding, Matt Mitchell, and eventually Ryan Bernal.

Getting into the third spot, Vander Weerd would chase after Bernal and Mitchell as the laps clicked down, and the field spread out. With the leader crashing on the 15th lap, Vander Weerd would take over the second spot and the restart would see him make a move for the lead only to see Mitchell make a cross over to put Vander Weerd back in the second spot.

With the caution waiving on the 23rd lap, officials decided to cut the race short, and Vander Weerd would finish second.

Friday night, Vander Weerd was in action at the Keller Auto Speedway with the King of Kings Winged 360’s. After timing in 12th fastest on the extremely slick surface, Vander Weerd would get through his heat race with a fifth place finish.

Lining up in the sixth row for the feature event, Vander Weerd would work towards the Top-10 as he tip toed around the tricky speedway. Running 10th, Vander Weerd would lose the handle on the 14th lap and be forced to go to the back of the pack. With a big race on tap the next night, Vander Weerd would opt to call it a night as he pulled his machine back to the pit area.

“I was really happy with how our weekend went overall,” Richard Vander Weerd said. “I would have like to get a good finish in the winged car, and be one spot better with USAC on Saturday night, but overall it was a good weekend for us.”

Richard and his Vander Weerd Racing team would like to thank Vander Weerd Construction, Stonegate Development, Battery Worx, Mid-Valley Pipe, Basic Industries, Steve Watt Enterprises, FK Rod Ends, PXP Racewear and K&N for their support in 2015.

2015 BY THE NUMBERS: Starts-30, Wins-6, Top 5’s-14, Top 10’s-18.

ON TAP: Richard and the Vander Weerd Racing team will return to the Keller Auto Speedway on Saturday night for another night of action with the USAC West Coast 360 Series.
