PETERSEN MEDIA- After a weekend off, Richard Vander Weerd returned to action in a big way on Saturday nigh; by chasing down and passing brother Jace in a thrilling battle to score the win at the Keller Auto Speedway on Saturday night.
“It was a tricky track, but once I was able to figure it out we were pretty good,” Vander Weerd said. “The last five laps was really fun battling with Jace side by side going for the win.”
Timing his Vander Weerd Construction/Stonegate Development/Battery Worx No. 10 machine in fourth fastest, the Visalia, CA driver would finish fourth in his heat race on a hooked up Keller Auto Speedway.
As the night went on, the track would stay greasy in spots, and have some spots that were slick so drivers had to me mindful of what changes they made, and what lines they chose in the feature event.
Gridding the field from the fifth row, Vander Weerd would benefit from an opening lap wreck that was him move into the third row once the race got underway. Jumping into the third spot early, Vander Weerd would lose several spots as he figured out the track and fell back to eighth.
Figuring out the highside in turns three and four, Vander Weerd would begin making up ground as he fought back into the second spot when the caution flag flew with just five laps to go. Lining up on his brothers rear bumper, Richard would begin an exciting five-lap battle for the lead that saw the two exchange the lead officially three times.
Getting some space with two to go while in the lead, he would have to fend his brother off on the final lap as he claimed an exciting feature event win.
“It is good to get out here and get a win,” Vander Weerd said. “We were able to figure out the top in turns three and four and that allowed us to get back up and get in contention. I just have to thank all of my guys, and my family for their support.”
