PETERSEN MEDIA: Getting back to his roots over the weekend, Robert Ballou traveled to Montpelier Speedway to do a little BOSS winged racing, the discipline in which his career started back in California. Making limited winged starts over the year, Ballou showed good speed on Saturday night, Ballou would close the night out with a fifth place finish.
“We had really good speed all night long and actually probably should have finished in the Top-Five, but the driver got in the way and made a couple of mistakes,” Robert Ballou said.
Time trials saw the Rocklin, CA native turned Hoosier state resident time the Dickinson Farms/Deaton Waterfront Services/Abreu Vineyards backed mount in seventh quickest in his group but 11th overall on the speed charts.
Lining up in the fourth row of his heat race, Ballou showed no signs of rust with the wings bolted on as he was able to make some big time moves and race his way forward. Getting better each and every lap, Ballou would charge his way to a second place finish which was good enough to line up 11th in the feature event.
From his sixth row starting position, Ballou would continue to shake off some rust and impress as he was able to continue to work his way forward. Getting up to fifth within the race’s first eighth laps, Ballou would make a couple of mistakes in the coming laps that would see him fade back to 10th.
Settling down and getting back into a rhythm, ‘The Mad Man’ would pick up a couple of positions in the waning laps to close his night out with an eighth place finish.
“It was a fun night at the track,” Ballou said. “To come out and have good speed and feel comfortable that quick was huge. Looking forward to some more winged racing here in the next few weeks.”
