Robinson Extends SCCT Point Lead with Johnny Key Classic Podium

PETERSEN MEDIA: Saturday night at Ocean Speedway, Ryan Robinson remained hot with the Sprint Car Challenge Tour as the Roseville, CA driver picked up a third-place finish behind a joint effort from his Weiher Racing team and his family team.

“I really have to thank my dad as well as the Weiher Racing team for coming together and putting a really strong car together for me to run while Todd Weiher recovers from some health issues,” Ryan Robinson said. “We had a really fast car, unfortunately the rubber came in around the halfway point and we just kind of got in line.”

With an overflowing pit area boasting 48 SCCT cars for the 61st running of the Johnny Key Classic, Robinson got his night started off on the right foot as he timed the Mako Farms/LP Holdings/RPI backed No. 14w machine in fastest overall in qualifications.

Lining up fourth in his heat race, Robinson was able to make a couple of quick moves to jump into the second position. Going on to finish second, Robinson advanced into the High Sierra Industries Dash where a third-place finish lined him up in the second row of the 35-lap feature event.

When the feature event came to life, it was Shane Golobic jumping out to a quick lead, but Robinson was able to get past Dominic Scelzi and take the second position.

Chasing after Golobic who set a torrid pace early, the leaders would find the back of the field in just four laps. Fighting through thick traffic, Scelzi would get under Robinson and drop him back to third as they negotiated through slower cars.

A caution on the 13th lap would take traffic out of the equation as the field restarted in double file formation. As the lead duo took off, Robinson remained in the third position as he reeled them back in as traffic again came into play.

As they continued to run through traffic, and Robinson remained in third, the trac would start to take rubber and the field would start to fall in line.

Hanging in third, Robinson would cap his night off with another podium run with the series, as he also was able to extend his point lead.

“We had a couple of really fun battles with Dominic Scelzi in the Dash and in the feature, and it was a good night for us overall,” Robinson said. “Fun to drive a fast car, fun to work with two great teams, and happy to extend our point lead.”

Weiher Racing would like to thank Mako Farms, Inc., LP Holdings, Roseville Precision, Inc., Escalon Body and Frame, Seth’s Racing Engines, Papa Chuck, Dave Harvey Trucking, and Morrison Concrete for their support in 2021!

BY THE NUMBERS: Races-19, Wins-1, Top 5’s-9, Top 10’s-17
