Robinson Sixth at Johnny Key Classic

PETERSEN MEDIA: Saturday night, Ryan Robinson and Weiher Racing made the trip to Ocean Speedway in Watsonville, CA for the Johnny Key Classic and the team scored a sixth-place finish in their lone appearance at the facility in 2020.

“Saturday night was the first time we have raced at Ocean Speedway as a team,” Ryan Robinson said. “We struggled a little bit early in the night, but we worked at it and got our car really good in the feature.”

With 48-cars checked in for the 60th Annual Johnny Key Classic, Robinson would get the night started off by timing the Mako Farms, Inc./LP Holdings/RPI backed No. 14W in 10th quickest in qualifying time trials.

Lining up in the second row of his heat race, passing would be tough on the fast surface though Robinson would finish in the fourth position and punch his ticket into the 35-lap Johnny Key Classic feature event.

Continuing to tweak on their car, Robinson rolled out for the feature event where he would take the green flag from the 12th starting position on a surface that was now extremely slick.

When the race came to life, Robinson got off to a nice start as he quickly jumped into the Top-10 as he found himself up in the eighth spot. With a very sporty machine underneath him, Robinson was able to continue to work his way forward as he worked up into seventh by the race’s 10th lap.

As the track continued to ‘go away’, rubber laying down was imminent, and Robinson continued to forge his way ahead before passing became difficult.

Falling back to eighth at the race’s hallway point, Robinson would use a restart with 15-laps to go to power his way up into the sixth position. Once he got into sixth, the track began taking rubber and as the field found the rubber groove, passing with essentially come to a halt.

Hitting his marks in the final laps, Robinson would close out his Johnny Key Classic with a sixth-place finish.

“We were really good, and we were able to get through traffic well and we got what we could before the rubber started laying down,” Robinson said. “Thanks to Todd, and everyone that helps out on this car for working hard all night long and giving us a really good shot in the feature.”

Weiher Racing would like to thank Mako Farms, Inc., LP Holdings, Roseville Precision, Inc., Escalon Body and Frame, Seth’s Racing Engines, Papa Chuck, Threadz Design, JDS Tile & Construction, Inc., and Morrison Concrete for their support in 2020!

BY THE NUMBERS: Races-17, Wins-4, Top 5’s-8, Top 10’s-12
