PETERSEN MEDIA- Just one week removed from getting a wreck in Tulare, CA that led to a broken finger, Joey Saldana and his Roth Motorsports team rebounded nicely in Stockton, CA as ‘The Brownsburg Bullet’ recorded two Top-Five finishes.
“We had two good finishes with the World of Outlaws, but it was still a little frustrating,” Saldana said. “Saturday night we had a really good car that should have at least been on the podium, but I made a couple bad decisions in traffic. We still ran well and we will keep working at it.”
Taking to the Stockton Dirt Track for the first of two nights of racing on Friday night, Saldana got things off to a quick start as he timed the Roth Enterprises/HR Livestock Transportation/Roth Investments No. 83 machine in third fastest in time trials, before picking up the win during heat race competition.
The heat race win would lead to a Dash berth, and the Brownsburg, IN resident would finish in the seventh spot, lining him up in the fourth row for the 30-lap A Main event.
On a slick and racy surface, Saldana was able to search around for grip as he raced his way towards the Top-Five. Battling with drivers like Terry McCarl, and Brian Brown, Saldana would break into the fifth spot.
As the laps clicked off, Saldana pursued Jason Johnson for fourth, and gave the series’ reigning Rookie of the Year all he could handle following a late restart, but could not get by him, and closed his night out in the fifth spot.
Returning to action on Saturday night for the FVP Western Spring Shootout finale, Saldana continued to flex his muscles during qualifying time trials as he would set the standard on this night.
Again racing his way to a heat race win, Saldana would run second in the Dash, and find himself on the front row of the feature event as he looked for his second win of the season.
Getting the jump on Daryn Pittman, Saldana quickly opening up a sizeable lead, as he drove away from the field, only to see a couple of early stoppages slow his blistering pace.
When the race got into an extending green flag run, Saldana was able to continue to run up front, but in traffic, it allowed Donny Schatz to close up on him.
Fending Schatz off for numerous laps, Saldana would lose the top spot in turns one and two on the 25th lap. Continuing to battle in traffic, Saldana admittedly made a couple of mistakes in the closing laps as he would end his weekend with a fourth place finish.
“I don’t know if we would have won, but I think if I stay on the cushion in traffic we end up second,” Saldana added. “I really have to thank my guys for all of their continued hard work, and giving me a car that contend on a nightly basis. It is good to run well in front of Dennis and Theresa Roth, and hopefully we can continue to make them proud.”
The Roth Motorsports team would like to thank Roth Enterprises, HR Livestock Transportation, Roth Investments, 3H Cattle, Mobil1, FK Rod Ends, Weld Wheels, Brown and Miller Racing Solutions, Kent Performance, Kaeding Performance, and Astro Titanium for their support in 2016.
