PETERSEN MEDIA: Looking to back up his July win with the Civil War Series at the Ocean Speedway, Justin Sanders would finish in the sixth spot during the 55th Annual Johnny Key Classic.
“We were really good early in the race, and I think I sealed our tires up near the end of the first segment and we got really free,” Sanders said. “The second segment the rubber really started going down on the track and passing was difficult.”
Being locked into the feature event after winning the final two qualifying races at the Ocean Speedway, Sanders would line up in the second row aboard the F&W Racing No. 18 machine.
Running in the fourth spot during the opening laps of the 50-lap A Main, Sanders would use the restart to rocket his way into the second spot and chase after race leader, Andy Forsberg.
Running very well in the second spot, Sanders would continue to do everything he could to catch Forsberg, but could not quite get to him to make a move as cautions plagued the flow of the first 25-lap segment.
A restart on lap 23 would see Sanders slip back a few positions, as he would find himself in the fourth spot when the scheduled red flag waived on the 25th lap, allowing teams to make adjustments for the second 25-lap segment.
When the race restarted, Sanders was a little too free for his liking on the slicked off surface, and he would give up a few positions until he could get to the rubber and settle into the sixth spot.
As the laps clicked off the rubber would continue to go down and passing would become non-existent in the final laps. Able to save his tires, Sanders would close out his Johnny Key Classic with a sixth place finish.
“With the success we have had at Ocean Speedway in both cars this year, we were all hoping for a better result with this being the biggest race of the year at the track,” Sanders said. “Unfortunately it just was not meant to be, but we are not discouraged. We will come back looking to return to victory lane this weekend.”
ON TAP: Sanders will be at the Marysville Raceway on Saturday night as he looks to expand his point lead.
