Sanders Nets Trio of Top-5’s in Hanford, CA and Claims Morrie Williams Tribute Championship

PETERSEN MEDIA: Reuniting with the Works Limited team in Hanford, CA over the weekend, Justin Sanders would run fourth in Friday night’s Cotton Classic before recording third and fifth during Saturday’s Morrie Williams Tribute Twin-20 feature events and claiming the event championship.

“It was another really good weekend for this team,” Justin Sanders said. “We were really in the mix during every feature event we ran, and although we didn’t pick up a feature event win, it was cool to claim the Morrie Williams Tribute overall championship.”

Sanders’ weekend kicked off on Friday night at Keller Auto Speedway in Hanford, CA as he took part in the Kings of Thunder portion of the Cotton Classic. Timing in third fastest in qualifying time trials, the Aromas, CA driver would power his way to a heat race win, and back that up with a win in the Dash.

Getting off to the early lead when the feature event went green, Sanders looked very stout out front as he looked to pick up his 21st win of the season. Leading most of the race, contact while battling for the lead late in the race would see him slip back to fourth.

Once he got the Paul Silva prepared No. 57 machine gathered back up, Sanders would salvage his race with a podium finish as he was able to get back to third when the checkered flag flew.

Saturday night the King of the West Series would take over as Keller Auto Speedway played host for the 2nd Annual Morrie Williams Tribute. Running a unique format that culminated with two 20-lap feature events, Sanders got the night kicked off by again timing in third fastest in qualifying time trials.

Racing his way to another heat race win, Sanders moved into the Sunnyvalley Bacon Dash where his fifth-place finish slotted him in the third row of the opening feature event.

Working his way forward, Sanders would get into the second position as he battled with race leader, Dominic Scelzi, as he has done on so many occasions amidst a great year for both drivers.

The race’s final restart gave Sanders one final shot at Scelzi however contact from the back would see Sanders get sideway on the front stretch as he would slip back to third, where he would finish.

With the field inverted for the final 20-lap feature event of the night, Sanders would take the green flag from the 20th starting position. One of the few that was able to slice and dice their way through the field, Sanders turned in a masterful performance.

Quickly working into the Top-10, Sanders would continue to march his way to the front. Though with 20-laps clicking off quickly, Sanders’ march would be halted as he got to fifth when the final checked flag waived.

With a finish of third in the first feature, and fifth in the second race, Sanders would have the point total that would crown him the overall champion of the 2nd Annual Morrie Williams Tribute.

“I really want to thank Kevin for continuing to provide a great opportunity, and Paul and the guys for always putting a race winning car on the track underneath me,” Sanders added.
