PETERSEN MEDIA: Fresh off of an A Main berth at the Knoxville Nationals and a second place run with the High Limit Series with Swindell SpeedLab, Justin Sanders returned home over the weekend and picked up a pair of fourth place finishes at Ocean Speedway.
“First of all, I want to thank Jordan and Kevin Swindell for an amazing opportunity to go back and run at the Knoxville Nationals, as well as take part in the High Limit Open at Lincoln Park Speedway,” Justin Sanders said. “They are a great bunch, have great equipment, and I wish we could have finished the deal off and picked up a win at LPS. But to run second on that stage and qualify for the Knoxville Nationals in my first attempt personally, and our first attempt together, was really special.”
Getting back to work in California aboard the Farmers Brewing/Mittry Construction/North County Plastering backed No. 2x entry on Friday and Saturday at Ocean Speedway for Johnny Key Classic weekend, Sanders earned a pair of fourth place finishes.
With 30 cars checked in on Friday night, Sanders re-acclimated himself quickly to the Mittry Motorsports car as he timed in seventh fastest overall. Lining up third in his heat race, the Aromas, CA driver was able to maintain his position as he pocketed a third-place finish and transferred into the feature event.
Unable to garner a berth into the Dash, Sanders found himself in an unusual spot at this home track as he took the green flag from back in the 11th starting position. Jumping into ninth when the race came to life, Sanders would make a couple of big moves that saw him work his way into sixth before falling back to seventh.
Running in seventh, Sanders moved into fifth at the halfway point before taking the fourth position on lap 22. Once in fourth, Sanders would battle with Dominic Scelzi for the final spot on the podium but ultimately settled for a fourth-place finish.
Back in action on Saturday night, Sanders got off to a strong start as he earned fast time honors in his qualifying group, which lined him up in the second row of his heat race.
Sanders was sporty on the slick surface in heat race action as he made a couple nice moves to charge his way to second, where he would finish, and earn a spot in the High Sierra Industries Dash as well as the impending 35-lap Johnny Key Classic feature event.
Running a thrilling Dash alongside Dominic Scelzi, Sanders finished second and put himself on the front row of one of the track’s crowned jewel events.
With Scelzi getting the jump on the slick bullring, Sanders settled into second where he ran during the race’s first green flag run which lasted nine laps. The ensuing restart saw Shane Golobic sneak under Sanders as he continued to run in a podium spot.
Running third, the leaders would quickly reach the back of the field and traffic would add another element to the battle. Slipping back to fourth on the 18th lap, Sanders would stick with Mitchell Faccinto who knocked him off the podium.
As the race clicked off laps, passing would become increasing difficult as the slick surface became very narrow. Unable to get back on the podium, Sanders capped his weekend off with his second consecutive fourth place finish, and third consecutive Top-5 dating back to the High Limit Open.
“I would have liked to have been more in the mix for a couple of wins over the weekend, but we will take the two Top-5’s and move on,’ Sanders said. “Thanks to everyone at Mittry Motorsports as well as their partners for continuing to provide great equipment.”
Justin and his team would like to thank Farmers Brewing, Mittry Construction, North County Plastering, Alkaline88, Andy’s Construction, Roadside 24hr Service, Wicked Cushion, Roger’s Diner, Factory Kahne, BG Labels and Tee’s, Walker Performance Filtration, Dixon and Son Tires, Ernie’s Service Center, East Lake Village, FK Rod Ends, Triple X Race Co., DMI, Keizer Wheels, Wings Unlimited, Ti64 Titanium, AIS Heating and Sheet Metal, Fred Lint and Family, JonSan Racing, Sandblast Service, G&N Construction, Steitz Towing, Durden Construction, Ernie’s Service Center, and Steve Duppman Racing for their continued support in 2022.
