PETERSEN MEDIA: Winning one week ago at Ocean Speedway, Justin Sanders returned to the speedway on Saturday night for the tracks’ crowned jewel event, the 59thJohnny Key Classic, and again parked in victory lane as he picked up his second career Key win.
“We were really good last week in a new car we put together, and that rolled over to Saturday night again,” Sanders said. “This is a pretty cool race, and to win it again is awesome.”
Timing the North County Plastering/Andy’s Construction/Yuba Sutter Aviation backed No. 17 machine in third fastest on the slick Ocean Speedway surface, Sanders would go on to finish third in his heat race.
Qualifying for the all important Dash, Sanders would run second to Ryan Bernal which put him on the front row of the 50-lap Johnny Key Classic feature event.
Beating Bernal into turn one, Sanders would flex his muscle as he led the way around his home track. As the surface slicked off after some track prep, Sanders would adapt well as it blew off very quickly.
Running the first 25 with no problems, Sanders sat comfortably out front during the race’s scheduled halfway stop.
Back underway, Sanders was still the man to beat out front. Leading the way, rubber would start to go down on the speedway, and Sanders would find and go on to pocket the feature event win.
“To lead all the laps, and be that strong is a good feeling,” Sanders said. “Thanks to all the great partners on this car for their support, and everyone that helps me out in the pits.”
