PETERSEN MEDIA: For the third time in 2015, Justin Sanders was able to sweep a weekend of racing as the Watsonville, CA driver won with the Civil War Series presented by Flowmaster on Friday night at the Ocean Speedway, before grabbing the lead late on Saturday night as he won again at the Marysville Raceway Park.
“You only hope to have a season like were having, but to actually be living it is unreal,” Sanders said. “I have three great teams that I drive for, and I am very thankful for all of the opportunities that have been put in front of me.”
Friday night at the Ocean Speedway, Sanders looked for his first Civil War win of the season as the series invaded the track he calls home.
30 cars checked in for the Howard Kaeding Classic, and it was Sanders timing the F&W Racing No. 18 machine in second fastest, before finishing fourth in his heat race.
Earning a spot in the Dash by way of his qualifying time, Sanders would start and finish fourth in the race and line up in the second row for the 30-lap feature event.
A very rough and tricky Ocean Speedway surface greeted competitors on this night, and as drivers searched for the best way around the track, Sanders made a couple of bold moves to jump into the second spot by lap nine as he chased after Shane Golobic.
The race’s lone caution flew on the 17th lap, and it was all Sanders needed as he slid up in front of the race leader, and never looked back as he led the final 13-laps to pick up his ninth feature event win of the season.
Making the trip back up to Marysville, CA on Saturday night, Sanders and company would time in third fastest to get the night started.
By way of a third place effort in his heat, Sanders would redraw for a feature event starting spot, and the three pill would again put him in the second row.
Settling into the third spot, Sanders would chase after early leader Cody Lamar, and second running, Kenny Allen. With Lamar having issues halfway through the race, Sanders would take over the second position as his sole focus was on Allen.
Looking like he had nothing for the leader, Sanders would close on him in a hurry in the race’s final three laps as traffic became a factor. Sailing into the top spot on the 23rd lap, Sanders would lead the final lap and a half to claim his 10th win of the season.
“We were really good on Friday night, and had a very strong racecar,” Sanders said. “Saturday night I think we were a third place car, but you take them anyway you can get them, and it is really better to be lucky on some nights. This F&W team has been great all year long, and we will come back next week looking for more.”
ON TAP: Sanders will be back at the Ocean Speedway on Friday night as he looks for a lock in spot in the Johnny Key Qualifier, and at the Marysville Raceway on Saturday night as he will try to extend both point leads.
