PETERSEN MEDIA: Climbing aboard the Friends and Family Racing No. x1 machine for the 23rd Annual Fall Nationals, Justin Sanders would lead laps during the Saturday night feature event before falling back to finish in the seventh spot.
“I was very pleased with how things went in what was our first time ever working together, and I thank everyone involved a ton for making it happen,” Sanders said. “We had a great car on Saturday night but I burnt the left rear tire off of it, and we lost some spots late in the feature event.”
Timing the F&F Racing entry in second fastest during qualifying time trials on Friday night, the Watsonville, CA driver would finish fourth during his heat race, and earn a spot in the night’s Dash.
Pulling the one pill during the Dash redraw, Sanders would jump out to the early lead before mechanical issues would see him head to the pit area with an eighth place finish.
Lining up for the A Main in the fourth row, Sanders would get off to a strong start in the early stages of the race before ending his night early as he felt his right-rear tire starting to lose air pressure.
Back to work on Saturday night, Sanders would time in eighth fastest just making the heat race inversion as he would line up on the front row of the second heat. Getting the best of Greg DeCaires in the heat, Sanders would pick up the win and again move into the Dash.
Finishing sixth, Sanders would put the F&F Racing No. x1 machine in the third row for the 40-lap Fall Nationals A Main event. A slick surface and a nasty wind storm would add another element to the race, but Sanders was able to work his way forward and take the race lead on the 15th lap.
Navigating the extremely slick surface on the bottom of turns three and four and on the top of turns one and two, Sanders would start to feel pressure from a surging Andy Forsberg.
On the 28th lap, Forsberg would sneak under Sanders to take over the race lead, and the final 12 laps would see Sanders struggle to find grip, as he had used his tires up getting to the top-spot. When the checkered flag waived on the event, Sanders would take the checkered flag with a seventh place finish.
“It is a bummer to fall back and finish where we did, but we really had a strong car,” Sanders said. “I had to abuse the left rear a little more than I had hoped, and once it went away, it was tough to find grip and we slid back. Again, I really want to thank everyone involved with F&F Racing for making this happen, and hopefully we can do it again.”
ON TAP: Sanders now sets his sights on the Ocean Speedway this Friday night as he will look to capture his second track championship of the 2015 season.
