PETERSEN MEDIA: Justin Sanders bid for his 19th win of the season came up just short as he opened up the 62nd Annual Gold Cup Race of Champions with a third place finish with the Civil War Series, before making his first two starts with the World of Outlaws.
“The Wednesday night show at Gold Cup seems to have my number,” Justin Sanders said. “Two years ago we were within a couple laps of winning it when I got a flat, and this year we were again a couple laps away but I just couldn’t hang on in the rubber.”
Piloting the F&W Racing No. 18 machine on Wednesday night, the Watsonville, CA driver would qualify eight fastest amongst the 50 cars checked in for the event. From the second row of his heat race, Sanders would get a great start and race his way into the lead, and earn a spot in the six-lap Dash.
Running second in the Dash, Sanders would start on the outside front row of the A Main, and jump into the lead as Sean Becker chased after him. With the track taking rubber, Sanders would find it, and look to hit it lap after lap as passing outside of it would be tough.
In the closing laps though, Sanders would start to have trouble keeping his machine in the rubber, as Becker closed in. Though he was able to fend second place off for several laps, he would lose the lead on the 28th lap, and would fall to third coming to the checkered flag.
Climbing aboard his own machine to take on the World of Outlaws on Friday night, Sanders would be disqualified from time trials and his heat race for having a disallowed sideboard on his top wing per the World of Outlaws rulebook.
Starting scratch on the field in the C main, Sanders would race his way up to finish fourth, however only two transferred to the B.
Coming back on Saturday night, Sanders would time his machine in 13th fastest, and run sixth in his heat race. From the fourth row of the B, Sanders would work his way up to the finish second and qualify for the 62nd Annual Gold Cup Race of Champions 40-lap A Main event.
Lining up in the 21st spot, Sanders would slowly work his way forward as the race went off at a torrid pace. Searching around a fast Silver Dollar Speedway, Sanders would end up finishing 16th.
“It felt great to get in a 410ci engine, and I look forward to running some more races with it this year,” Sanders said. “I made some mistakes with the wing we ran that really hurt us, but was pleased with making the Saturday night A.”
ON TAP: Sanders and the F&W Racing team will be at the Marysville Raceway on Saturday night.
