Saturday Night Runner Up Highlights Legends of Placerville Weekend for Tony Gomes

PETERSEN MEDIA- Competing at the Annual Nor*Cal Posse Shootout that also played host the legends of years gone by at Placerville Speedway over the Labor Day Weekend, Tony Gomes picked up a second place finish on Saturday night before closing the weekend out with a 10th place effort on Sunday.

“It was a really good weekend for our team, and it’s always a fun and unique event to run with no points in mind,” Tony Gomes said. “Saturday, we had a good race with Willie Croft, and congrats to him on the win, and Sunday we just kind of got stuck in a battle from 6th-10th, and ended up 10th when it was all said and done”

With qualifying being split into two sessions on Saturday night, Gomes timed in third fastest in his group which placed him on the pole of his heat race. Racing to a heat race win, Gomes locked himself into the feature event, but it also qualified the Lund Construction/Anrak/Sam Rhodes backed No. 7C for the six-lap dash.

Finishing fifth in the Dash, the Modesto, CA driver was locked into the fifth starting position for the 30-lap feature event. When the race came to life Gomes jumped into fifth before moving into fourth on the race’s fourth lap.

Continuing to move forward, Gomes worked into third on the 10th lap, and then when the leader had issues on lap 12, he found himself in second on alongside Willie Croft on the ensuing restart.

Once in second, Gomes chased after Croft and really turned up the pressure as they got into traffic. Having a shot to make a move for the lead in the race’s closing laps the yellow flag flew, and impeded Gomes’ progress.

Back underway, Gomes simply settled in at rode the night out with a hard fought second place finish.

Returning to action on Sunday night to conclude to two-night show, Gomes timed in 11th fastest in qualifying time trials and again found himself on the front row of his heat race. Needing the win to get into the Dash, Gomes slipped to second on the start.

Chasing after Tanner Carrick, Gomes locked into the feature with his second place finish but found himself back in the 10th starting spot for the 35-lap affair.

From the fifth row starting position, Gomes found himself in hard fought battles all race long as he battled between sixth and 10th on the slick surface during the finale. Racing hard, Gomes couldn’t quite create any separation from the middle of the field as he searched lap after lap.

When the 35-lapper drew to a close, Gomes closed his weekend out with a 10th place finish.

“10th wasn’t what we had in mind for Sunday after a good run on Saturday but we had a fast car and we are all excited for these final two point races,” Gomes added. “A big thank you to Cody, Bobby, and John for all of their hard work, and again I am so thankful to be a part of Cody and Mandi’s race team. It is great to have two great people behind me.”
