PETERSEN MEDIA- Friday night Sean Becker became a member of an elite club. Fresh off of a self explained ‘bad’ weekend at the Bradway, Becker and Menne Motorsports returned to their strong ways as ‘The Shark’ won the feature event in Chico, CA marking the 100th win of his storied career.
“It is such a cool feeling to get that 100th win,” Sean Becker said. “I have had some great car owners get me to this level, and it’s cool to get the job done at Silver Dollar Speedway with Menne Motorsports.”
Becker and company would be fast all night in the North State as Becker opened the night up by timing the Mike’s Hard Lemonade/Cherry Street Mini Storage/Menne Ranch Hay, Inc. No. 75 machine in fastest in qualifications.
Becker would proceed to run third in his heat and then pull the six pill during the redraw, which would line him up in the third row for the 25-lap feature event.
When the race came to life, the Roseville, CA driver got off to a great start as he carved his way forward and quickly worked his way into the second spot. Once in second, Becker would begin to chase down race leader, Bud Kaeding.
On the race’s 19th lap, Becker would carry a ton of speed and momentum out of turn four and it would result in slight contact with Kaeding getting into turn one which led to the zero car spinning out.
Though incidental and unintentional, Becker would take command of the race an fend off a pesky Kalib Henry in the race’s closing laps as he went on to pick up his 100th career win.
“I feel so bad for what happened between Bud Kaeding and I,” Sean Becker said. “Our car just had some great drive out of four, and unfortunately we made contact.”
Looking to build off the momentum on Saturday night, Becker and company made the tow to Placerville Speedway to compete with the KWS-NARC Fujitsu Racing Series.
Timing in eighth fastest in qualifying, Becker would then get involved in an absolute dog fight with Andy Forsberg in his heat race before finally settling for a second place finish, which was still good enough to get him into the Dash.
Lining up sixth in the Dash, ‘The Shark’ would feast on his pray as he would work his way forward on the slick ¼ mile to finish in the third spot and find himself in the second row for the 30-lap finale.
As the green flag was displayed to the field, Becker had a rock-solid start as he surged to the lead and began to set the pace early though a few cautions slowed the pace early in race.
Continuing to handle business on restarts, Becker would continue to lead the way as the action picked up behind him at times. Running flawless through traffic, Becker looked to be on his way to win no. 101 until the caution flew with just two laps remaining.
The final restart would see Becker again get off to a nice start, but a bobble in turn three coming to the white flag would allow Gio Scelzi to close on him.
Taking the white flag as the leader, Becker would lead the field down the back stretch, and as he committed to the bottom, Scelzi would go high and the duo would drag-race to the checkered with Becker just being edged out by a nose in a photo finish.
“That was just a heart breaker,” Sean Becker said. “Last week I said we needed to do our homework, and Dan Menne did just that and we were really fast all weekend, but just got beat by Gio Scelzi. Dan Menne deserves a KWS win, and I feel like I let him down. We have really good speed again, and we will try again in a couple of weeks.”
Becker would like to thank Mike’s Hard Lemonade, Cherry Street Mini Storage, Menne Ranch Hay Inc., Astro Titanium, Ponybracket.com, Hunt’s Race World, Molecule, Shaver Racing Engines, FK Rod Ends, K&N, Pioneer Auto Body, and The Joie of Seating for their support in 2017.
