PETERSEN MEDIA- Winning a championship can often elude drivers over the course of their career. For Shane Golobic, he had an extremely strong 2014 season that saw him claim his second career Ocean Sprints presented by Taco Braco championship to go along with his first career Civil War Series presented by Flowmaster title.
“It’s pretty cool to win both deals,” Golobic said. “It just goes to show how good my team is, and how hard they work.”
Piloting the Keith Day owned No. 22 machine, primarily in 360ci action, Golobic also saw action in the Joe Vonschriltz No. 121 410ci entry, as well as the Doug Bock midget.
In action on 59 occurrences aboard the three different entries, the Fremont, CA driver had a very nice stat sheet that saw him score six victories, to go with 21 podium finishes, and 27 Top-5’s. Showing his consistency, Golobic also scored 42 Top-10 finishes and topped the speed charts during time trials seven times.
During the Summer months, Golobic went on a roll as he picked up a big win at the Silver Dollar Fair race with the Civil War Series after out dueling Jonathan Allard before going on a string of second place finishes that admittedly got frustrating at times.
Golobic and company were in contention for wins on numerous occasions, but second place finishes at the Howard Kaeding Classic, Johnny Key Classic, and Mark Forni Classic aided in his championship run. Though it was a non-point race, Golobic also had a strong battle with Sean Becker at the Fall Nationals that resulted in a second place finish.
“We hit a stretch there where we seemed to be second more often than not,” Golobic added. “It was frustrating at the time it was happening, but in the scheme of things, it showed how strong we were, and led us to a pair of championships.”
Though he did score second place finishes in some big races, Golobic also did find victory lane during some big races too.
Scoring the 4th of July win at the Placerville Speedway, Golobic went on to sweep a night of action at the same track on August 2nd as he won in both the winged 360 and the midget.
During the 2014 Tribute To Gary Patterson at the Stockton Dirt Track, Golobic clinched the Civil War Series Championship, but got upside down during the feature event. Coming back for the 410 feature event, Golobic put the frustrating crash behind him as he triumphantly won an exciting feature event, marking his first KWS win of the season and second for his career.
Claiming his second Ocean Speedway title, Golobic joins a list of drivers like Brent Kaeding and Tommy Tarlton to claim multiple titles. With his Civil War championship, Golobic becomes the 12th different champion in the series’ 24 year history, and he breaks an eight-year streak of drivers being named Becker or Forsberg winning the title.
“Rick Bragg and Keith Day put me in a great position in 2014, and it is kind of unbelievable to win both of these championships,’ Golobic noted. “Their hard work and dedication made this all possible, and it really is a pleasure to drive for them.”
Golobic was equally appreciative for the other opportunities that he also had during the 2014 season.
“I also have to thank Joe Vonschriltz, and Doug Bock Racing for the opportunities they gave me in 2014. Joe Vonschriltz has been one of my biggest supporters over the years. We had our ups and downs, but it was not lack of effort,” Golobic noted. “I love racing midgets, especially with Doug and Joey Bock. I thank them for continuing to allow me to race with them, and I am already counting down the days until Chili Bowl.”
Though he has had a strong season in 2014 to date, it’s not done yet. Golobic will accept his awards this Saturday night during the Night of Champions with both series’ but he will return to the track the following weekend for the Western World Championships.
Shane Golobic would like to thank Keith Day, Joe Vonschriltz, Doug Bock, Rick and Sharon Bragg, Dennis, John Golobic, Chris McKim, Jeff Castillo, Keith Day Trucking, Gabilan AG Services, ButlerBuilt, Factory Kahne, Keizer Aluminum Wheels, DMI, Wings Unlimited, Brown and Miller, and Impact Racing Products for their continued support.
ON TAP: Golobic will be crowned the 2014 Ocean Sprints and Civil War Champion on Saturday night, before running a midget the following weekend at the Western World Championships.
