Shane Hopkins Surges to Second at ‘Prelude to Forni Classic’

PETERSEN MEDIA- Getting back to work at Placerville Speedway on Saturday night, Shane Hopkins would put together a great run in the feature event that saw him battle for the lead and ultimately finish second in the feature event.

“It was a really good night, and I am excited for the ‘Forni’,” Hopkins said. “Brian Sperry and my guys really gave me a great car, and I only wish that we could have started a little closer to the front.”

With 25 cars checked in for the tune up leading up to one of the track’s crowned jewel events, Hopkins would time the High Sierra Industries/C&H Motor Parts/Anrak backed No. 21 machine in 14th fastest in time trials.

Lining up on the front row of his heat race, it would be imperative that Hopkins pick up the win and transfer into the redraw. On the slick Placerville Speedway surface, Hopkins would do just that. Leading flag to flag, Hopkins took the win, and it would lead him to the seven pill in the nightly redraw.

With the track undergoing a makeover prior to the feature event, Hopkins would take a liking to the bottom groove, and would find a lot of speed with his left front up on the infield berm.

Patiently working the low side of the speedway, it was apparent that Hopkins had a ton of speed as he jumped into fifth on the fourth lap of the race, before moving into fourth just before the race’s halfway point on the 10th lap.

Continuing to stick the bottom groove, Hopkins used a lap 13 restart to make a big move and race into second and begin to chase after leader, Kalib Henry.

With traffic approaching, Hopkins would pull alongside Henry and the race would start to heat up, only to see the caution fly and give the leaders clear track.

Back to green, Hopkins would continue to chase after Henry, and again as they got near traffic another yellow was displayed. The race’s final restart saw Hopkins stick with Henry, but also would feel pressure from Ryan Robinson making it a three-car battle for the win.

Slipping back to third briefly, Hopkins would get second back on the final lap, and give one final chase to Henry but would come up short and settle for second.

“That is one of those nights you really cant complain about,” Hopkins added. “We had a couple shots at the lead, just had some untimely yellows fall. Thanks to my dad, Jamie, Jonathan, Chris, and Jayden for all of their hard work making our car fast and keeping it clean.”

Hopkins would like to thank High Sierra Industries, , C&H Motor Parts, ARP, ADCO, Anrak, C&H Veteran Enterprises, Brian Sperry Racing, Capitol ACE Hardware, King’s Meats, LRB, Gary Morgan Graphics, Jake Morgan Racing, Johnson Motorsports, Joe Hunt Magnetos, Image Salon and Spa, PT Shocks, Tiner Hirst Enterprise, Kyle Johnson Racing, and Petersen Media for their support in 2020.
