PETERSEN MEDIA- Despite missing it a little during Wednesday night’s July 4th feature event at Placerville Speedway, Shane Hopkins was able to turn it into a nice night at he came home with a 10th place finish and finds himself fourth in the 2018 point standings.
“We kind of missed our set up in the feature event, but to still finish 10th is a good night,” Shane Hopkins said. “I feel like we continue to improve weekly and we will get back to it Saturday night and hopefully turn these Top-10’s into a Top-Five.”
Timing the Moxie Mechanical/Morrison Concrete/TNT Powdercoat machine in 10th quickest in qualifying time trials, the Cameron Park, CA driver would pocket a second place finish in his heat race to fellow Rookie of the Year contender, Jodie Robinson.
Moving into the 25-lap feature, Hopkins would take the green flag from the 10th starting position. From the fifth row, Hopkins would have trouble making ground on the slicked off ¼ mile. Falling back to 12th, Hopkins would lose the handle on his machine getting into turn one, and would be forced to the back of the lead lap cars.
Back underway, the Rookie of the Year contender would pick up a few spots in the final laps as he would pocket his fourth Top-10 finish of the season to celebrate Independence Day.
Following the Sprint Car Challenge Tour to Stockton Dirt Track on Saturday night, Hopkins would have one of those nights he would soon like to forget. Timing in sixth quickest in his qualifying group, Hopkins would line up in the sixth spot of his heat race.
On a slick Stockton Dirt Track surface that would soon turn abrasive, Hopkins would look to make a move for the final transfer position into the feature event. Having a run on fifth, Hopkins would go for it but would lose the spot on the exit of the corner and would end up seventh and forced into the ‘B’ Main.
Lining up seventh in the semi, a close call on the start would see Hopkins lose several spots initially on a surface that would soon take rubber. Getting settled into eighth once the rubber went down, Hopkins would get in the groove and make laps as he capped his weekend off with an eighth place finish.
“Saturday night was definitely frustrating,” Hopkins said. “I haven’t quite been able to figure Stockton out, and that was the case again for our team. We will go to work this week and get prepared for another night of action at Placerville Speedway Saturday.”
Hopkins and Moxie Motorsports would like to thank Moxie Mechanical, Morrison Concrete, TNT Powdercoat, LRB Ent., ADCO Driveline, C&H Veteran Enterprises, Soares Motorsports, Joe Hunt Magnetos, Capital Ace Hardware, Johnson Motorsports, American River Overhead, Americote Painting, Gary Morgan Graphics, and ART Enterprises for their support in 2018.
