PETERSEN MEDIA- Early in 2017, Shane Hopkins ran into former Placerville Speedway racer Vern Morrsion while having a family dinner. Getting into a conversation, Morrison and Hopkins left with an agreement to put the then 21-year-old in a 360 later in the season.

Working through that spring, Hopkins and Morrison were able to hit the track in late July and get a couple of races under their belts with the plan of running a full schedule in 2018.

With a full off season to fine tune and rebuild, Hopkins and Moxie Motorsports are geared up for 2018 and are planning to run for Rookie of the Year with the Elk Grove Ford Sprint Car Challenge Tour pres. by Abreu Vineyards, as well as at Placerville Speedway, a track where Morrison, and Hopkins’ father, Eric competed at in the 90’s.

“I can’t begin to thank Vern Morrison enough for the opportunity he has presented me with,” Hopkins said. “We got to talking and he still had a couple of engines and a car in his garage, so we went to work and have been working ever since.”

Running limited shows in 2017, Hopkins biggest achievement was running the alphabet during the inaugural Nor Cal Posse Shootout at Placerville Speedway and qualifying for the star studded feature event.

“There was definitely a ton of improvement from race one through our last race,” Hopkins said. “I had a blast, and am looking forward to running more races in 2018.”

For Hopkins, racing has always been a passion of his. Running Karts as a youngster, he then moved into a crewmember role and spent the last few years working for Tri C Motorsports and with various drivers. With the knowledge on the inner workings and the mechanics of the car, Hopkins is confident he can use that knowledge an apply it to the cockpit.

“Placerville is a tough place to run to begin with, and this year the competition is shaping up to be extremely tough, so I am looking forward to running against some of the best in the region on a weekly basis,” Hopkins added. “The SCCT also is a tough show night in and night out, and I look forward to the challenges that both will bring me.

“We have also been fortunate to team up with some great marketing partners, and I am extremely thankful for each and everyone of them that has stepped up and joined our team. I also have to thank everyone that has helped us out this winter to get ready to race later this month.”

Hopkins and Moxie Motorsports would like to thank Moxie Mechanical, Morrison Concrete, TNT Powdercoat, LRB Ent., ADCO Driveline, C&H Veteran Enterprises, Soares Motorsports, Joe Hunt Magnetos, Capital Ace Hardware, Johnson Motorsports, and ART Enterprises for their support in 2018.
