PETERSEN MEDIA- Saturday night everything lined up for Shane Hopkins and Hopkins Racing as the Placerville, CA driver finally got to stand in victory lane for the first time as a driver at a track he grew up at.
“Woooooooooh,” exclaimed an exuberant Shane Hopkins in victory lane. “I am speechless. I really don’t know what to say except we just won at Placerville! It has been a hard process getting our family team dialed in, but this means a lot and I can’t thank everyone one of these partners enough.”
Lining up on the front row of the feature event alongside another driver hungry for his first win at the track, Tony Gualda, Hopkins nailed the start as he surged to the lead early riding the Placerville Speedway cushion.
Working the highside, the first half of the race would click off in seemingly no time at all as Hopkins paced the field over the track’s all time winningest driver, Andy Forsberg.
Getting into traffic, Hopkins did blink as he kept the veteran shoe behind him until the caution flew on the 14th lap.
Though he would now have clear track in front of him, Hopkins would have Forsberg alongside him as the race came back to life.
Nailing his restart, Hopkins would jump out front and quickly gap the field as the battle for second picked up behind him.
As the laps clicked down the packed house continued to root on the local product until the final caution on lap 20 delayed what was coming.
One final restart with Andy Forsberg on his tail proved to be no bother to Hopkins as he ripped around the cushion for the final five laps and scored his first ever win.
“I am just thankful to be able to drive a sprint car, and to finally win is just surreal,” Hopkins added. “To see everyone run up to the car after words and get all the congratulatory messages is cool. Looking forward to using this momentum for a couple of big races this weekend.”
