PETERSEN MEDIA- Unsure if he would be able to compete at the Sprint Car Challenge Tour’s final event after enduring engine issues a couple of weeks back, Shane Hopkins was ale to make it happen as he secured Rookie of the Year honors despite a tough night at Stockton Dirt Track.
“I have to thank Andy Gregg for working with our team and allowing us to run his engine and compete Saturday night,” Shane Hopkins said. “I also have to thank Vern Morrison and our partners for working hard to make it happen. It was a tough night, but it is cool to secure Rookie of the Year honors with the Sprint Car Challenge Tour.”
Checking in at a track that has really given Hopkins fits all year, the Cameron Park, CA driver timed the Moxie Mechanical/Morrison Concrete/TNT Powdercoat machine in ninth quickest in his time trial group.
Lining up ninth in his heat race, Hopkins would struggle to get comfortable in his Moxie Motorsports entry as his ninth place finish forced him into the ‘C’ Main event.
When the ‘C’ came to life, a couple of cars in front of Hopkins would get together getting into the first turn and Hopkins would get in on the action with nowhere to go an endure damage to the nose wing of his entry.
Forced to restart from the tail end of the field, Hopkins would have his work cut out for himself as only two drivers would move on into the ‘B’ Main. Getting his elbows up, Hopkins would claw his way forward as far as he could in limited laps but his fourth place finish would bring his 2018 season to an end.
“It wasn’t the finish to the year we wanted, but what a season it was,” Hopkins said. “I have to thank Vern Morrison again for giving me a great opportunity, all of our amazing partners for continuing to support us, my Uncle Justin and Aunt Carrie for letting us work out of their shop, and a host of family and friends that were there to step in and support every step of the way.”
