PETERSEN MEDIA- Making a handful of starts at the conclusion of the 2017 season, Shane Hopkins and Moxie Motorsports set out to earn Rookie of the Year Honors and finish Top-Five in the points at Placerville Speedway in 2018. With the point season now over, Hopkins can check off both those goals as his body of work earned him both the 2018 Placerville Speedway Rookie of the Year and he finished third in the final standings.
“It has been a ton of work to hit our goals and non of this would be possible without Vern Morrison, my family, and all of our great marketing partners,” Shane Hopkins said. “Saturday didn’t end how we had hoped but we still had plenty to celebrate.”
25 cars checked in for the final point show of the year on Saturday night and the Cameron Park, CA driver opened the night up by timing the Moxie Mechanical/Morrison Concrete/TNT Powdercoat No. 97 entry in 17th quickest.
Heat race action saw Hopkins finish in the fifth position which then put him 17th on the starting grid for the 25-lap finale.
On a racy Placerville Speedway surface, Hopkins was able to come to life in the ‘A’ as he began carving his way forward against a very deep field of cars. Working into the Top-10, Hopkins continued to battle as he would approach the Top-Five late in the race.
Getting into sixth, Hopkins would work on the fifth position but the 16th lap saw him get into the turn four wall and bring his night to a bit of an early end.
“We had a great run going and I just made a mistake,” Hopkins added. “It was a great weekly season at Placerville and now we can focus on getting back to work with the SCCT.”
