PETERSEN MEDIA- Saturday night, Shane Hopkins would make his first appearance at Stockton Dirt Track as he took part in the Sprint Car Challenge Tour’s Jimmy Sills Classic.
“It was my first time on anything other than a quarter mile and it took some getting used to,” Shane Hopkins said. “It was fun, and a valuable experience so hopefully when we get back there I have a better idea of what to expect heading into the night.”
Timing the Moxie Mechanical/Morrison Concrete/TNT Powdercoat No.97 machine in 32nd fastest overall out of the 53 cars checked in for the event, Hopkins would end up ninth overall in his grouping.
Lining up ninth in his heat race, Hopkins would pick up a position at the stripe as he finished eighth, but he would find himself in one of the two twin ‘C’ Main events.
Running well in the ‘C’ Main, Hopkins would lead early before being overtaken by 2017 King of the West champ, Bud Kaeding. Able to hang on to a second place finish the Cameron Park, CA rookie would extend his night as he advanced into the ‘B’ Main.
From the tail end of the semi, Hopkins would mix it up with some of the region’s top drivers as he continued to acclimate to the bigger track. Finishing 14th Hopkins would bring his night to an end.
“These are the kind of nights you are going to have as a rookie at a new place,’ Hopkins added. “I have to thank My dad, my uncle Jamie, Chad Hopkins, Jake Morgan, Brian Sperry, Vern Morrison, and my girlfriend Taylor for everything. With the weather hopefully a non factor now hopefully we can get into a racing rhythm.”
