PETERSEN MEDIA: Justyn Cox traveled to the Pacific Northwest last week for Speedweek, and came home with the hardware as he was crowned the 2017 Speedweek Northwest Champion following the six-day, six-race schedule.

“It was a busy week, but we really had some fun with it,” Justyn Cox said. “We were able to get another Speedweek win, and ran well enough to earn the Speedweek Championship which is really special considering all of the past champions.”

The action kicked off last Monday night at Siskiyou Motor Speedway in Yreka, CA. Timing the Berco Redwood/Berry Lumber/Trex backed No. 31c machine in third quickest in time trials, Cox would advance from fifth to fourth in his heat race.

Lining up on the front row of the Dash, Cox would pick up the win and find himself on the pole for the 30-lap affair. Getting off to a great jump in opening night feature event, Cox was on cruise control out front. Having a couple of tense moments navigating a rut in turns one and two, Cox would keep the rubber side down as he raced his way to his third feature event win of the year.

Traveling to Coos Bay, OR on Tuesday night, Cox would simply have a bad night. Timing in 16th quickest in time trials, the Clarksburg, CA driver would finish seventh in his heat race and himself in the 15th starting position in the feature event.

Looking like he may turn his night around, Cox had a good run going in the feature event as he came alive in the feature event. Working his way up to the fifth spot, Cox would lose a drive line and his night would come to an early end.

With no time to dwell, Cox checked in on Wednesday night at Willamette Speedway in Lebanon, OR. Going out last in time trials, Cox would again have a slow start as he ended up 16th quickest for the second night in-a-row.

Picking up a heat race win, Cox would just miss out on the Dash and lined up eight for the 30-lap feature event. On a very racy track surface, Cox was able to move inside the Top-Five where he would get to fourth. Battling with Steven Tiner late in the race, Cox just couldn’t get by his competitor as he took the checkered flag with a fourth place finish.

Thursday night saw the show check into the tight confines of Sunset Speedway in Banks, OR. On a night where passing was extremely tough, Cox would time in fifth fastest, before working his way from the 10th starting position to finishing in the sixth spot.

Speedweek Northwest would come to a head on Friday and Saturday night as they double dipped at the popular Cottage Grove Speedway.

Friday night’s program saw Cox get off to a great start as he timed in fourth fastest. Lining up ninth in the feature event after a fifth place run in his heat, Cox would get really good early as he would work his way up into the second spot as the race neared the halfway point.

The second half of the race would see Cox struggle a little bit as he would lose a couple of positions to Roger Crocket and Tiner. Still having a good night, Cox closed his night out with a fourth place finish.

Cottage Grove Speedway as again the destination on Saturday night as a tough swing would come to an end. Timing in fifth fastest, Cox would go from fifth to third in his heat race and move into the nightly Dash.

Getting a bad start in the Dash, Cox would slip from his front row starting position and finish fourth, putting him in the second row for the 30-lap Speedweek finale.

When the race came to life, Cox would have issues in the first corner as he would see his brake caliper give way, forcing him to run the entire feature with no brakes. Nursing his machine around the ¼ mile, Cox would hang on to finish fifth and come away as the 2017 Speedweek NW Champion.

“We had a couple nights of bad luck, but that happens in this game,” Cox said. “We had a really good car for the most part, and like I said it is a pretty cool feat to win the whole deal. Thanks to everyone who was able to make the trip with us and work hard all week long.”

The Cox Racing team would like to thank Berco Redwood, Berry Lumber, Trex, PM Truck Repair, Justice Brothers, K&N, LRB, Konnected, A.R.T., Sacramento Theatrical Lighting, EyeLusions, All American Powder Coating, Coos Bay Speedway, Swimming Pool Perfections, Tim’s Hot Rod Shop, Shell Shock, Moyle Race Engines, and Manzer Motorsports for their support in 2017!
