Tanner Carrick 13th at First Dirt Cup

PETERSEN MEDIA: Turning his first laps ever at Skagit Speedway during the famed Dirt Cup, Tanner Carrick would overcome some tough luck early in the week as he raced into the Saturday night feature event and picked up a 13th place finish.

“Thursday night was tough, we had a rock get into the engine compartment and forced us to change engines and we didn’t get timed in well as we thrashed to get things buttoned up,” Carrick said. “Friday we were much better, but our point total from Thursday forced us into the ‘B’ on Saturday but we were able to still race into the 50-lap feature.”

Battling engine issues from the debris during Thursday’s qualifying session, Tanner Carrick kicked his Dirt Cup off by timing the CVC/Cemex/Interstate Oil backed No. 83T in 28th fastest of the 44 drivers checked into the pit area.

Making the heat race inversion, it would be imperative for Carrick to pick up the win and tabulate max possible points as they dictated the weekend. From his front row starting position, Carrick was impressive out front as he turned in the most dominating heat race performance of the night.

Picking up the win convincingly, Carrick was still stuck in the ‘B’ based on his qualifying points. Starting fifth in the ‘B’, Carrick would fight hard to get into the fourth and final transfer position, but in a talent heavy ‘B’, he was on the outside looking in as his night came to a close.

Friday night, Carrick’s night got off to a much more mellow start as he timed in 12th fastest on this night. Well inside the heat race inversion, Carrick took the green flag in his heat race from the sixth starting position and added to his point total by running up to a fourth-place finish.

Sitting 10th in points heading into Friday night’s feature, the 20-car inversion lined the Lincoln, CA driver up in the 11thstarting position for the scheduled 40-lap feature event on a very slick Skagit Speedway surface.

Battling for position inside the Top-10 all feature long, Carrick would get up into the Top-10 at times but also fell back to as far as 16th in the race’s early goings.

Settling in and continued to figure out Skagit Speedway, Carrick ended his night with a 12th place finish and sat 19th in points and was the first driver to not be locked into Saturday’s feature.

Lining up on the pole of the Saturday ‘B’ with six transfers into the feature event up for grabs, Carrick felt good about his chances as he ran inside the Top-Two for the duration of the race. Finishing second, Carrick was locked into the 50-lap Dirt Cup as he took the green flag from the 20th starting position.

In the 50-lap finale, Carrick was able to move forward amidst a very star-studded field. Making some moves that would be negated by cautions, luck didn’t seem to be on the California driver’s side.

Scratching and clawing his way towards the Top-10, Carrick would bring his weekend to a close with a 13th place finish during his first ever attempt at the Dirt Cup.

“We were fast, and I thought things went pretty well for our first time seeing the place,” Tanner Carrick said. “We had some bad luck at times, but it was a fun weekend, and I am thankful to my team for making it all possible.”

Tanner Carrick would like to thank CVC, Cemex, Interstate Oil, Conti, Harris and Sloan, Emerald, Timberworks Construction, Hanson Truss, Eddie’s Lincoln Auto Body, Kaeding Performance, and Arai for their continued support
