PETERSEN MEDIA: Fresh off of a win at Placerville Speedway one week ago, Tanner Carrick and the Carrick Motorsports team returned to the famed bullring on Saturday night with $8585 on the line for the winner, and after a hard fought battle with Dominic Gorden, Carrick ultimately settled for a second place finish.
“Clark and everyone gave me a great car, I just made a mistake when we were out front on traffic and it cost us a win,” Carrick said. “Gorden was good, and he was even better in open track so once we got out front after that caution he was tough to catch.”
With 35 cars checked into the pit area for the track’s crowned jewel for weekly action, Carrick timed the CVC/Cemex/CA Waterfowl backed No. 83T in seventh fastest in qualifying time trials.
Lining up in the second row of his heat race, Carrick raced his way into the second position but needed to get to the top spot to guarantee a berth in the redraw. Finishing second, Carrick has some good fortune on his side and ended up being the fastest qualifier in his heat to transfer so earned that redraw spot.
Pulling the four in the draw, Carrick got off to a great start when the 30-lapper went green on the freshly groomed Placerville Speedway. Racing into third on the eighth lap, Carrick continued to patiently work his way forward amongst the lead group of cars.
Taking over second on the 12th lap, Carrick slid into the lead in front of the packed crowd on the 14th lap as the leaders raced through extremely dense traffic. Leading two laps, Carrick would need to quickly get out of the gas on the 16th lap and it allowed Dominic Gorden to close and take over the lead before the first stoppage of the race came on the 18th lap.
When the race resumed, Carrick settled into second as Gorden quickly gapped the field before the yellow flew a lap later. The next restart saw Gorden again gap Carrick as he held down second and waited until traffic came into play in the closing laps.
Not quite able to close like he had hoped in the final laps, Carrick closed his night out with a hard fought second place finish.
“When there is big money on the line you obviously push a little harder to get those wins, and I think I pushed a little too hard too early and it bit us,” Carrick added. “Still, a great night and a good result heading into some big races the next month.”
Tanner Carrick would like to thank CVC, Cemex, California Waterfowl, Interstate Oil, D.R. Horton, Conti, Harris and Sloan, Hanson Truss, TC Guide Service, Eddie’s Lincoln Auto Body, Simpson Strong-Tie, A&A Concrete Supply, Kaeding Performance, and Arai for their continued support.
