PETERSEN MEDIA: Saturday night in Chico, CA, Tanner Carrick’s star was shining bright as he went toe-to-toe with the best drivers in the World during the Gold Cup Race of Champions feature event. Carrick found himself out front and pulling away until a safety issue with his fuel cell forced him to relinquish the lead on the 25th lap.
“Saturday night we were in a really good position to possibly get an Outlaw win, but we had a little misfortune with our fuel cell that Outlaw officials ultimately deemed unsafe, and it took us out of the lead,” Tanner Carrick said. “I really have to thank all of the people that work on this car for the gains we have made with our 410 program the last few nights.”
Saturday night, Carrick got off to a great start with ‘The Greatest Show on Dirt’ as he timed the CVC/Cemex/Interstate Oil backed No. 83t machine in 4th fastest in qualifying time trials.
Lining up on the front row of his heat race, the Lincoln, CA driver would pick up a second-place finish to Brad Sweet, and he would safely transfer into the 40-lap Gold Cup feature event, and also earned a berth in the all-important DirtVision Fast Pass Dash.
Continuing to show speed in front of the capacity crowd, Carrick would pick up a fourth-place finish and find himself in the second row to kick off the feature event in what was only his third start with the series. Running fourth in the opening stanzas of the event, Carrick would get rolling as he forged his way into the lead on the eighth circuit as he carried a ton of speed through turns one and two.
Just past the halfway point, Carrick would find himself in a torrid battle with Brad Sweet for the top spot as they raced through traffic, but he was able to keep Sweet and then Logan Schuchart at bay until the caution flag waived on the 25th lap.
Under the stoppage, officials directed Carrick to stop on the back stretch to inspect his fuel cell. They deemed the cell too loose and directed him to the work area for a safety issue and forced him to give up the race lead with 15 laps left in the event. Carrick would not return.
“We had a ton of speed, and they definitely knew we were a factor,” Carrick said. “I want to thank everyone for the outpouring of their support. It really means a lot, and I can’t wait to try again against the Outlaws.”
Carrick was also in action on Friday night with the World of Outlaws to open up the two-day extravaganza.
Getting off to a tough start in time trials, Carrick timed in 22nd fastest before a very strong effort in his heat race saw him work into the fourth position and transfer directly into the feature event.
Lining up 14th, Carrick would work his way forward on a very racy surfacy that was provided by Silver Dollar Speedway officials. Work his way up to sixth, Carrick would make a move to crack the Top-5, but a yellow would negate his pass.
The ensuing restart saw Carrick make slight contact with the front stretch wall, but the impact was enough to knock his Jacob’s Ladder down and made the final laps tricky.
Carrick would salvage the event with an 11th place finish.
Last Wednesday night, Carrick kicked off the Gold Cup Race of Champions as he checked in for 360ci action. Timing in fourth fastest in his group, Carrick would line up in the second row of his heat race.
Racing to a third-place finish, the Lincoln, CA product would move into the opening night feature event where he took the green flag from the 12th starting spot.
Working his way towards the front and looking to earn enough event points to lock into Saturday’s feature event, Carrick would slice and dice his way up to sixth. Looking to get into the Top-5, Carrick would trip up on a rut in turns one and two that resulted in him getting upside down as he ended Wednesday night with a 14th place finish.
“It was a good week of racing, and fun to get in three nights in Chico, CA,” Carrick said. “Big thanks to everyone who continues to support our racing program.”
