PETERSEN MEDIA- Making a return trip to Keller Auto Speedway with the King of the West Series on Friday night, Sean Becker would go toe-to-toe with Shane Golobic for the race win before ultimately settling for a second-place finish.
“Everything was working out in our favor on Friday night, but despite a wing failure, I’m still not sure we would have been able to hold off Shane Golobic,’ Sean Becker said. “To win a KWS race you have to be at full strength, and it was definitely a heartbreaker to not be able to finish it off.”
Friday night got started off with a bit of turmoil at Keller Auto Speedway as timing and scoring issues forced officials to make a change and utilize a dual heat race format rather than have drivers time in.
Lining up fourth in his first heat aboard the Starr Property Management/A.R.T./Morrison Concrete backed No. 83V, Becker would finish fourth on a very heavy and fast racing surface.
Becker’s second heat race would again see the Roseville, CA driver line up in the fourth position but in this race, he was able to gain a few more points as he tallied a second-place finish which would lock him into the Dash.
Lining up on the front row of the Dash, ‘The Shark” would finish second to Shane Golobic which would put him on the front row of the 30-lap Anthony Simone Classic feature event.
When the race came to life it was Becker jumping out to the early lead. Leading the way early, a couple of stoppages would allow Golobic a chance to take the top spot, and he would on a lap five restart only to see a red flag fly and negate the pass and put Becker back out front.
Following the open red, Becker would not let the same thing happen on this restart as he was able to lead the way and keep the field behind him. On the extremely fast racing surface, Becker would bobble on the 13th lap, and it would allow Golobic to by him for good.
Chasing after Golobic during the final half of the race, Becker would cap the Simone Classic off with a second-place finish.
The weekend did not end here however, as the series traveled further south to Kern County Dirt Track for their penultimate event of the season on Saturday night.
With a functional scoring system, all things would roll off as scheduled and Becker would time in eighth fastest amongst the 20-cars checked in to battle on this night.
Running fourth in his heat race, Becker would move into the feature event where he would take the green flag from the 12th starting position.
Despite another narrow surface on this night, Becker was able to battle with some of the series best as he worked his way into the Top-10. With things clicking off quickly, Becker would solidify his position in the Top-10 in the race’s closing stages as he went on to finish 10th.
“Saturday was another solid night for the Vertullo Motorsports team,” Sean Becker said. “We battled all main event long with some really good cars and great drivers. I am really glad we were able to sneak into the Top-10 late in the race and finish there.”
BY THE NUMBERS: Starts-57, Wins-1, Top 5’s- 13, Top-10’s- 30
ON TAP: Becker will be back in action this weekend in Stockton, CA for both the SCCT and KWS season finale events.
