PETERSEN MEDIA: Despite being out of the car for a couple of weeks, Steven Tiner showed no signs of rust during the Nor Cal Posse Shootout at Placerville Speedway over the weekend as he finished seventh during Friday night’s opener before advancing from the C to the A on Saturday only to have engine issues at the start of the race.
“I felt like we had a ton of speed both nights but I put our team behind the eight ball with really poor qualifying runs,” Steven Tiner said. “I was looking forward to seeing how far we could get Saturday but unfortunately we had issues really before the green flag dropped.”
With 41 cars in the pit area on Friday night, Tiner would time the Larry Davis Farms/Wright Process Systems/Fisher Racing Engines backed No. 94 machine in eighth fastest in his group, putting him in the fourth row of his heat race.
Needing to finish in the Top-Five to transfer to the ‘A’, the Sacramento, CA driver would do just that as he would get the fifth and final transfer position and move into the feature event where he would grid the field from the 18th starting position.
On a slicked of and racy surface, Tiner would act fast as a little bit of rubber would go down on the surface late in the race. Carving his way forward in the early laps, Tiner would slowly work his way near the Top-10. Taking advantage of a couple late restarts, Tiner would find something and settle into seventh where he would take the opening night checkered flag.
Looking to better himself on Saturday night, the 2017 Placerville Speedway Track Champion would again get off to a tough start as he would time in eighth quickest again in an extremely loaded qualifying/heat race group.
Finishing ninth in his heat race, Tiner would be forced into the ‘C’ Main. Able to win the ‘C’, Tiner would move into the B Main where he would tag the rear of the field. On a slicked off surface, Tiner would avoid a couple of near misses as he raced his way to finish third and punch his ticket into the 35-lap finale.
Lining up in the last row, Tiner would notice something go south under the hood of his machine when engines fired. Taking the green flag, Tiner would take the right hand turn off the back stretch and go up the exit ramp back to his pit area where his night would come to an end.
“I have to thank everyone who helped us out all weekend,” Steven Tiner said. “I put us in holes both nights, but we worked hard and really fought out of them both nights.”
