PETERSEN MEDIA- Tony Gomes and the C&M Motorsports team have been extremely strong at Placerville Speedway in 2023. Having a quick car each night they have checked in, the sentiment remained true on Tuesday night as the Modesto, CA driver led 24 laps and picked up this third win of the season.
“A couple years ago I was in contention for this race, but I made too many mistakes and flew off the edge of the track,” Gomes said in victory lane. “On a personal level I feel like I have come a long way since then and can put complete races together, and you mix that with a guy like Cody putting his touch on this car and you are able to win some races.”
With 20 cars in the pit area for the track’s annual 4th of July Spectacular, Gomes got off to a bit of a slow start to his standards as he timed the Lund Construction/Anrak/Sam Rhodes backed No. 7c in 11th fastest in time trials.
Lining up on the front row of his heat race, Gomes took full advantage of the prime starting position as he turned in eight strong laps and picked up the win. By way of his win, Gomes put the C&M Motorsports car in the nightly redraw where the one placed him on the pole of the feature event.
Getting the jump on the initial start, the red was needed as a massive pile up in turns four called for a complete restart.
Back underway, Gomes again got the jump but Joel Myers Jr used momentum on the high side of turns three and four to pass Gomes and lead the first lap. Sticking the bottom in turns one and two, Gomes powered back ahead of Myers down the back stretch and took the lead which he never relinquished.
Taking a liking to the thick Placerville Speedway curb that was built up around both ends of the speedway, Gomes was extremely strong during green flag runs despite being slowed by numerous restarts during the feature.
Able to keep the field at bay during each and every restart, Gomes was able to continually break away from the field as he went on to pick up the win in dominating fashion.
“Winning this Fourth of July race is really a dream come true, and it was a very exciting night,” Gomes added. “I want to thank Cody and Mandi for continuing to believe in me as well as the guys in the pits helping Cody out, Bobby, John, and Martin. We have a great team of partners who were able to enjoy this with us, and hopefully we can do it again on Saturday.”
The C&M Motorsports team would like to thank Lund Construction, Anrak, Sam Rhodes, Alturas Tires, Swartz Diesel, Adrian Blanco Jewelry, Kings Meats, American Paving Systems, PT Shocks, Creason Enterprises, and all of their product sponsors for their continued support.
