Tony Gomes Bounces Back From Late Race Incident to Finish 15th at SCCT Opener

PETERSEN MEDIA- Fresh off of a Top-Five during Placerville Speedway’s season opener, Tony Gomes looked to be well on his way to backing those efforts up on Saturday night with the Sprint Car Challenge Tour until he was caught up in a late race incident while running in the fourth position.

“Saturday night was going really well for us until lap 24,” Tony Gomes said. “We did everything right and we had a really good run going, but we got collected with a spinning car in turns three and four and took us out of the Top-Five and a possible podium run.”

With a robust 48 cars packed into the pit area, Gomes opened Saturday night up by timing the Lund Construction/Anrak/Sam Rhodes backed No. 7c in third fastest in his qualifying flight.

Based on his qualifying time, Gomes would line up on the front row of his heat race and would need to win to earn a spot in the all-important High Sierra Industries Dash. When the green lights flashed on in his heat, Gomes had his elbows up and took care of business as he blasted around the ¼ mile.

Racing his way to the win, Gomes moved into the Dash where his fourth-place finish placed him in the second row for the opening 35-lap feature event of the season with the series.

As the race came to life, Gomes jumped into third as he chased after the lead duo of Kaleb Montgomery and Tim Kaeding. In some tight knit, intense racing, Gomes would work into second for a hand full of laps on the 11th circuit, before slipping back to third on the 15th maker.

Continuing to run hard, Corey Day entered the fray on the 19th lap and Gomes slipped back to fourth. While the Top-Five all raced in a tight pack, disaster struck for Gomes on the 24th lap as a spinning car clipped him and brought him to a stop in turns three and four.

Giving up fourth, Gomes restarted from the tail end of the field as he would ultimately come home with a 15h place finish.

“We were good int eh feature, and I felt like I was biding my time well in the closing laps, but unfortunately we just had some bad luck come our way,” Gomes added. “I am proud of our speed, and I am excited to get to Stockton Dirt Track this week. I am really thankful to be in a great spot with Cody and Mandi, and I want to thank everyone who helps in the pits and helps us stay on the track.”

The C&M Motorsports team would like to thank Lund Construction, Anrak, Sam Rhodes, Alturas Tires, Swartz Diesel, Adrian Blanco Jewelry, Kings Meats, American Paving Systems, PT Shocks, Creason Enterprises, and all of their product sponsors for their continued support.
