Tony Gomes Garners Top-10 During 360ci Portion of Gold Cup

PETERSEN MEDIA- Opening the 70th Gold Cup Race of Champions on Wednesday night in Chico, CA, a robust 50 cars made the call for the popular and when the fireworks concluded Gomes capped the night off with a 10th place finish.

“Wednesday night to open Gold Cup is always an electric night and a fun race to be a part of,” Tony Gomes said. “We rolled out a fresh car and we had good speed all night long which was a great thing with a full pit area.”

Kicking the night off in time trials, Gomes timed the Lund Construction/Anrak/Sam Rhodes backed No. 7C entry in seventh fastest in his qualifying flight which lined him up in the second row of his eight-lap heat race.

Starting and finishing third, the Modesto, CA driver was securely locked into the 30-lap feature event as he found himself 12th on the starting grid.

Biding his time from his mid-pack starting position, Gomes was able to work his way into 10th by the race’s halfway point once things got into a rhythm. Continuing to work, he was able to get himself into seventh in the closing laps of the feature event and was in a battle for a possible top-five.

Looking for a way forward, Gomes got put in a precarious spot that forced him to possibly get into a wreck or drive off the end of the track. Opting for the ladder, Gomes got up over the edge of the track in the final laps of the race and slipped back to 10th.

Keeping his mount inside the Top-10, Gomes took the checkered in 10th for his 11th Top-10 of the season with C&M Motorsports in what was the teams 13th start of the season.

“We were much better than a 10th place car, but late in the race I got over the edge in a battle rather than forcing an issue for sixth and it cost us a few positions,” Gomes said. “I want thank Bobby, Jason, and Cody for all of their hard work in the pits, and Cody and Mandi for continuing to let me drive their car. Looking forward to a big weekend in Placerville with some extra money up for grabs.”

The C&M Motorsports team would like to thank Lund Construction, Anrak, Sam Rhodes, Alturas Tires, Swartz Diesel, Adrian Blanco Jewelry, Kings Meats, American Paving Systems, PT Shocks, Creason Enterprises, and all of their product sponsors for their continued support.

ON TAP: C&M Motorsports and Tony Gomes are scheduled for a Placerville Speedway doubleheader this Saturday and Sunday.

BY THE NUMBERS: Starts-12, Wins-1, Top 5’s-4, Top 10’s-10
