Tony Gomes Overcomes Tough Night for 10th Place Finish at Placerville Speedway

PETERSEN MEDIA- Sprint Car racing and adversity can often go hand in hand. Tony Gomes and C&M Motorsports are living that right now after running three races together early in the season. Despite the adversity, Gomes and company continue to rise up and the Modesto, CA driver battled back to finish 10th on Saturday night at Placerville Speedway.

“It’s been a rocky start to each night we have ran together so far this year, and Saturday was another one of those nights,” Tony Gomes said. “We did a good job of controlling the aspects of the night that were in our control, but a couple outliers dictated our end result.”

With 32 cars on hand on Saturday night, it wasn’t all turbulent for Gomes and the Lund Construction/Anrak/Sam Rhodes backed No., 7c entry. Timing in third fastest in his qualifying flight, Gomes earned the front row for his heat race.

When his heat went green, Gomes got the early jump and looked to be well on his way to a win which garnered a berth in the nightly redraw. What was going smooth quickly turned as a cut right rear changed the complexion of Gomes’ heat and his night as it allowed Shane Hopkins to sneak by on the last lap and drop him back to second.

Still safely transferring to the feature event with a second place finish, Gomes missed out on the redraw but did still manage to garner a fifth row starting spot in the ‘A’ based on his qualifying effort.

As the feature event came to life, Gomes was working his way forward when contact amidst a battle for track position resulted in a flat tire and forced him to the work area just prior to the halfway point of the feature event.

Making repairs and rejoining the field from 19th, Gomes had his elbows up as he quickly made his way back towards the Top-10.

When the dust settled of the 25-lap feature, Gomes crossed under the Ron Stahl checkered flag with a 10th place finish.

“I hate it for my entire team, because each night we have been fast, but we just get put in bad spots that hinder our finishes,” Gomes said. “Cody and Mandi continue to have confident in me, which I appreciate, and Cody, Bobby, and Cody Cook worked hard in the pit area all night long.”

The C&M Motorsports team would like to thank Lund Construction, Anrak, Sam Rhodes, Alturas Tires, Swartz Diesel, Adrian Blanco Jewelry, Kings Meats, American Paving Systems, PT Shocks, Creason Enterprises, and all of their product sponsors for their continued support.

ON TAP: C&M Motorsports will idle for the next two weekends before returning to action on May 30th for the Dave Bradway Jr Memorial opener.

BY THE NUMBERS: Starts-4, Wins-0, Top 5’s-0, Top 10’s-3
