PETERSEN MEDIA- The 55th Annual Johnny Key Classic got off to a nice start for Jason Statler, but unfortunately for the Grass Valley, CA pilot it did not end well for him as issues would relegate him to a 21st place finish.

“We just got our 360ci engine back for this race, and I was really pleased with the job that Rick at S&S did for us,” Statler said. “We timed in well, ran well in our heat, and had a good feature event going until lap 15.”

Checking in as one of 30 drivers looking to race their way into the 55th Annual Johnny Key Classic 50-lap feature event, Jason Statler would get off to a very good start on Saturday night as he timed the DF Rios Motorsports/Amerikote/Riley Collins Auto Body no. 00 entry in sixth fastest in group qualifying.

Lining up on the front row of his heat due to the unique format that was in play on this night, Statler would finish second in his heat race behind Brad Furr, and successfully move into the feature event.

From his 10th starting spot, ‘The Big Guy’ was able to move forward early and often in the feature event. Taking advantage of a restart on lap 9, Statler was able to work his way up into the fifth spot on the 10th lap, and on the 11th lap would come in contact with Carson Macedo when he got up and over the cushion.

Abel to continue on with some wing damage, Statler would battle with Gregg DeCaires until he would get into trouble and bring his machine to a stop. Taking a quick trip to the work area, Statler would be mired in the back of the pack.

Following the break on lap 25, Statler would be in the wrong place at the wrong time on the 33rd lap, and being credited with the caution, he would be done for the night.

“My guys gave me a really good car, but I just made a mistake that really hurt us,” Statler said. “I thank them for all of their hard work, I just wish I could have finished where we deserved to be.”

Jason Statler would like to thank DF Rios Motorsports, Amerikote, Riley Collins Auto Body, SCI, Kaeding Performance, Kistler Racing Engines, Simpson Race Products, Yak Graphics, Factory Kahne Shocks, Ultra Shield, Rod End Supply, Santomauro, and Stephanie’s Custom Interior for their continued support.

ON TAP: Jason Statler and his team will be back kin action when the Gold Cup Race of Champions kicks off on Wednesday September 9th.
