PETERSEN MEDIA: Justyn Cox came within just four laps of a possible victory at Placerville Speedway Saturday night during the track’s point’s opener. Unfortunately for Cox, an incident in front of him would leave him with nowhere to go and his night would come to an end on lap 21.
“We had a really good race with Tony Gualda for the lead most of the night, but at the end of the race we were really good and were pulling away,” Justyn Cox said. “Unfortunately a car got out of shape in front of me and already being committed to the cushion I had nowhere to go and it took us of the race.”
Timing the Berco Redwood/Berry Lumber/Trex backed No. 31c entry in fourth quickest in qualifying time trials at the 15th Annual Tribute to Al Hinds, the Clarksburg, CA driver would advance from his third starting position to finish second in heat race action.
Lining up on the inside of row number two, Cox would settle into the third spot as he worked the bottom of the speedway. Battling with Justin Johnson for second, Cox would overtake his competitor on the seventh lap and would move to the cushion as he chased after early leader, Tony Gualda.
Hammering the curb lap after lap, Cox would work his way past Gualda on a lap 12 restart and would take over command of the 25-lap feature event. Out front, Cox would lay down some great laps as he reeled in the back of the pack.
Lap 19 would see Cox get tight on the curb and bobble, and it would allow Gualda to close back in and put pressure on Cox for the race lead. Committed to the top, Cox would enter turn three on lap 21 as the race leader, but a car would lose the handle in front of him and contact would ensue and bring Cox’s night to an end and dash away his hopes of earning his first win of the season.
“It was a bummer way to end what was a great night,” Cox said. “We had a ton of speed, and I think it would have been a great finish. I have to thank all of my great partners for their support, and my guys for working so hard.”
The Cox Racing team would like to thank Berco Redwood, Berry Lumber, Trex, PM Truck Repair, Justice Brothers, K&N, LRB, Konnected, A.R.T., Sacramento Theatrical Lighting, College Cyclery, Arai, Racing Optics, All American Powder Coating, Coos Bay Speedway, Swimming Pool Perfections, Tim’s Hot Rod Shop, Shell Shock, Moyle Race Engines, and Manzer Motorsports for their support in 2018!
