PETERSEN MEDIA: Taking part in USAC/CRA Sprint Week, Austin Liggett would have a week that would test his resolve, but the Tracy, CA gasser never blinked and fought hard all week long.
“It was a rough week, but I cant thank my family and the Finkenbinder team for making it all possible,” Liggett said.
The annual tour through Northern California kicked off over Labor Day at the Louie Vermeil Classic. Piloting the family owned Excel Environmental Services/Liggett Trucking/Lucas Oil No. 83 machine, Liggett showed off a very fast car during the Saturday night opener, however he would get into some trouble in turns one and two and get his machine upside down.
Forced to a back up car on Sunday night, Liggett continued to make noise as he had a very good run going in the feature event, until mechanical woes forced him back to the pit area while running in the fifth spot.
Not sure what they were going to do for Monday night’s event at Petaluma Speedway, Liggett got the nod to compete aboard the Ted Finkenbinder No. 3T car.
Adapting quickly to the Finkenbinder entry at Petaluma Speedway, a track that he had been fast at before earlier in the season, Liggett had a very good run going in the feature event on a retro rough and tumble racing surface.
Running in the fourth position, Liggett would make a move to take over the third spot but his machine would hook a rut a bicycle, and he would slip back to finish in the eighth spot.
Tuesday and Wednesday would serve as off days for Sprint Week, but Liggett would add his own leg to the busy week as he picked up his 11th win of the year by way of a late race thriller in Chico, CA aboard the Brian Sperry Racing entry.
Thursday night would see USAC/CRA California Sprint Week continue on, as Liggett was able to time the No. 3t entry in seventh quickest in time trials. Running third in his heat race, Liggett would do all he could on a locked down Silver Dollar Speedway as he scored his second Top-10 of the week with the Finkenbinder team by way of a ninth place finish.
Traveling to Ocean Speedway on Friday night for the penultimate Sprint Week event, Liggett would again get off to a nice start, as he would qualify inside the Top-10.
In what was an extremely exciting feature event, Liggett would battled with the likes of Tyler Courtney, Chad Boespflug, and Jake Swanson as they jockeyed for position inside the Top-Five. Holding his own, and flexing some muscle, Liggett would capture his best finish of the week with USAC/CRA as he crossed the stripe in the fourth position.
A grueling week came to an end on Saturday night as the team checked into Keller Auto Speedway in Hanford, CA, a venue that Liggett was victorious at earlier in the season.
Putting together another good run in the finale, Liggett again found himself running well inside the Top-Five for the second night in a row. As the laps clicked off, Liggett continued to get sronger and looked to get on the podium with just six laps to go.
As Liggett looked to make his move, an issue with the fuel cell would cut his night short.
“I really owe a lot to my parents, Landon and Angela, Dave, and Ted, because they worked their butts off to get me through the week,” Liggett added. “It wasn’t the week we were hoping for, but we made the best of it and some really good speed.”
Austin Liggett Racing would like to thank Excel Environmental Services, Liggett Trucking, Lucas Oil, Tool Technology, Infinity Shocks, Steve Watt Enterprises, Brian Sperry Racing, and Jarrett Soares Racing for their support.
2017 BY THE NUMBERS: Races-33, Wins-11, Top 5’s-23, Top 10’s-29
ON TAP: Liggett returns to action on September 21st as he will climb back aboard Brian Sperry’s No. 51 at Placerville Speedway.
