PETERSEN MEDIA- Fresh off of one his best seasons at the Perris Auto Speedway, Richard Vander Weerd returned to form during the season opening event at the track as he ran second to Bryan Clauson on Saturday night.
“We didn’t time in where we wanted to on Saturday night, but it ended up working out for us,” Richard Vander Weerd said. “We led some laps early, but Clauson got us around the halfway point and we held on to run second.”
Timing the Vander Weerd Construction/Stonegate Development/Battery Worx No. 10 machine in 11th fastest in qualifying time trials, Vander Weerd would come from the third starting spot in his heat race to pick up the win.
Finding the Mid-Valley Pipe/Basic Industries/Factory Kahne Shocks No. 10 on the pole for the 30-lap USAC/CRA Sokola Shootout Feature event. With the waiving of the green flag, the Visalia, CA drier jumped out to the early lead, but soon felt pressure from Clauson.
Fending off the Indiana driver for a few laps, Clauson would get by Vander Weerd on the 12th lap, though Vander Weerd did not go away easy. Keeping Clauson in striking distance, Vander Weerd would also keep a pesky Brody Roa at bay, as he closed out the USAC/CRA opener with a runner-up finish.
On Friday night, Vander Weerd got his season kicked off as he stopped in at the Las Vegas Dirt Track to take on the USAC West Coast 360 series.
Drawing a high pill in the heat race draw, Vander Weerd would line up in the back of his race, where his finish would find him in the night’s B Main.
Lining up third in the semi, Vander Weerd quickly jumped into the race lead, until a cut tire forced him out of the race and brought his first race in 2016 to an early close.
“It was good to get back in the car, but I just made a lot of mistakes,” Vander Weerd said. “I have to thank everyone who makes this possible, and hopefully we can get back to it this weekend.”
Richard and his Vander Weerd Racing team would like to thank Vander Weerd Construction, Stonegate Development, Battery Worx, Mid-Valley Pipe, Basic Industries, Factory Kahne Shocks, Steve Watt Enterprises, FK Rod Ends, PXP Racewear and K&N for their support in 2016.
2016 BY THE NUMBERS: Starts-2, Wins-0, Top 5’s-1, Top 10’s-1.
ON TAP: Richard is scheduled to be at the Thunderbowl Raceway this Friday and Saturday night with the USAC West Coast 360’s.
