PETERSEN MEDIA- Taking part in the 2nd Annual California Sprint Week, Richard Vander Weerd had some strong runs highlighted by a podium effort during the opening night of the Louie Vermeil Classic at the Calistoga Speedway.

“We had some good runs over the week, and had some bad luck too,” Richard Vander Weerd said.

Kicking Sprint Week off at the Calistoga Speedway back on Labor Day Weekend, the Visalia, CA driver would get off to a great start as he led the first 11 laps but as the rubber started to go down on the track, he would lose a few spots.

Able to weather the storm, Vander Weerd was able to work his way back into the third spot and put his Vander Weerd Construction/Stonegate Development/Battery Worx No. 10 machine on the podium.

Back at the Calistoga Speedway the following night, Vander Weerd would roll off for the A Main from the third row, and would get off to a very nice start as he quickly found himself in the third spot.

With the track getting more slick than Vander Weerd and company thought, he would fall back as far as the 10th spot, but was able to get back up to seventh, where he would finish,  as the track began to take rubber.

Monday night brought on quite an eventful night at the Petaluma Speedway. After timing in 12th fastest, Vander Weerd would line up 11th in the feature event.

Working his way forward on the uncharacteristically slick surface, drivers behind Vander Weerd would begin using the infield to race on. With visibility becoming an issues from the infield dirt being thrown onto the speedway, Vander Weerd would follow suit and end his night with a sixth place finish.

Heading to the Silver Dollar Speedway on Thursday night after a night off from racing, Vander Weerd would time the Mid-Valley Pipe/Basic Industries/Factory Kahne Shocks entry in 11th fastest.

On a tricky Silver Dollar Speedway surface, Vander Weerd would work the bottom of the track much of the race as he battled to finish in the 10th spot.

Jumping into the lead on the third lap during the feature event at the Keller Auto Speedway in Hanford, CA on Friday night, Vander Weerd would run up on a lapped car on the sixth lap and bicycled on the cushion doing just about everything but getting upside down.

Making repairs to his machine, the Vander Weerd Racing team would rally to finish in the 11th spot.

The grueling week came to a close on Saturday night as the USAC/CRA Series invaded the Santa Maria Speedway. After timing in third fastest, Vander Weerd and company seemed to chase it all night, though he was able to close the week out with a sixth place finish.

“It was a long week, that is for sure,” Vander Weerd said. “We would have liked to get a win, and were in position to a few times, but it just wasn’t in the cards this week.”

Richard and his Vander Weerd Racing team would like to thank Vander Weerd Construction, Stonegate Development, Battery Worx, Mid-Valley Pipe, Basic Industries, Factory Kahne Shocks, Steve Watt Enterprises, FK Rod Ends, PXP Racewear and K&N for their support in 2015.

2015 BY THE NUMBERS: Starts-40, Wins-6, Top 5’s-18, Top 10’s-26.

ON TAP: Richard and the Vander Weerd Racing team will be in action on Saturday night at the Keller Auto Speedway with the Duinkerken Farms King of Kings 360 Series before heading to the Perris Auto Speedway on Saturday night.
