PETERSEN MEDIA- One night after helping his brother Jace score a second place finish during winged action, Richard Vander Weerd would have a wild night in Santa Maria, CA that saw him work very hard a sixth place finish.
“It was a tough night in traffic,” Richard Vander Weerd said. “We had a really fast car, and bounced back from an incident and worked our way back up to a sixth place finish.”
Timing the Vander Weerd Construction/Stonegate Development/Mid-Valley Pipe backed No. 10 entry in ninth fastest in qualifying time trials, Vander Weerd would go on to pick up a win during his heat race.
By way of his heat win and his qualifying effort, the Visalia, CA driver would line up on the pole for the feature event. When the race came to life, Vander Weerd would slip back to the second spot as the outside lane proved to be the preferred lane all through the feature event.
Slipping back to third as the leaders quickly got into traffic, Vander Weerd would close in a slower car extremely fast and it would result in him having to get on the binders which led to a spin.
Getting hit by a couple cars while stalled out, Vander Weerd would take a trip to the work area where his Vander Weerd Racing team would work fast to get the him back on track.
Able to make repairs, Vander Weerd would again showcase some great speed on this night. Working his way back forward as quickly as he could, Vander Weerd would fight back to score a sixth place finish.
“It was frustrating to fall out of contention the way we did,” Vander Weerd said. “You do your best around slower cars, but sometimes you can’t quite guess what they’re going to do in time. Thanks to my guys, and hopefully we can get this thing back up front on Saturday.”
Richard and his Vander Weerd Racing team would like to thank Vander Weerd Construction, Stonegate Development, Mid-Valley Pipe, Basic Industries, Factory Kahne Shocks, Steve Watt Enterprises, FK Rod Ends, PXP Racewear and K&N for their support in 2017.
