Vander Weerd Pleased With Winged Performance

PETERSEN MEDIA- Jumping into winged sprint cars in 2015, Richard Vander Weerd has seemed to fight gremlins in each outing. Friday night, Vander Weerd was pleased with how his night went, and on Saturday he would race his way to a sixth place finish with the USAC/CRA Series.

“I was pretty happy with how Friday night went,” Richard Vander Weerd said. “It was nice to get a full winged feature event in.”

Timing his Vander Weerd Construction/Stonegate Development/Battery Worx No. 10 machine in 16th fastest, the Visalia, CA driver would finish in the fourth spot in his heat race, and safely transfer into the 30-lap A Main event.

Taking the green flag from the eighth row, Vander Weerd was able to race his way towards the Top-10 as he worked around the immaculately prepared Keller Auto Speedway. In the latter stages of the race, however the track would start to get better, and Vander Weerd would start to fight a racecar that was becoming too tight.

Falling back a few positions in the closing laps, Vander Weerd would finish in the 17th spot.

“We had a good run going, but it felt like the track brought moisture back up during the race, and we started to get pretty tight, but all in all I was pleased with how the night went,” he added.

Making the trip down to the Perris Auto Speedway on Saturday night to battle with the USAC/CRA Series, Vander Weerd would time in 10th quickest in qualifying time trials, before picking up a third place finish during heat race action.

Gridding the field from the fifth row, Vander Weerd would fall back to 12th in the race’s opening laps, but would settle in and get moving forward. With the bottom being extremely fast on this night, Vander Weerd would do what many struggled to do, and that was pass cars.

Running a smart, and patient, race, RVW would close out his weekend with a sixth place finish.

“Passing was tough on Saturday, but I was glad we were good enough to gain some spots,” Vander Weerd said. “I think we were better than a sixth place car, but I didn’t want to do something stupid pushing too hard. We have a little break ahead from 410 racing, so we are definitely looking to regroup, and get back to where we should be running.”

Richard and his Vander Weerd Racing team would like to thank Vander Weerd Construction, Stonegate Development, Battery Worx, Mid-Valley Pipe, Basic Industries, Factory Kahne Shocks, Steve Watt Enterprises, FK Rod Ends, PXP Racewear and K&N for their support in 2015.

2015 BY THE NUMBERS: Starts-42, Wins-6, Top 5’s-18, Top 10’s-27.

ON TAP: Richard and the Vander Weerd Racing team will be off this weekend before returning to action on October 3rd at the Keller Auto Speedway with the USAC West Coast 360 Series.
